The second ODI against Australia was a highly significant one for team India. It was not because of the great victory, not because the series was levelled, not because of another special century from Virat Kohli. It was solely due to the special performances from former skipper MS Dhoni and the pace-attack leader Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

On the road to the World Cup 2019, the form of these two players was a matter of concern for the management. Since his return from the injury, Bhuvi didn’t play much of competitive cricket. He looked rusty against the Windies and against Australia in the T20Is last year.

For Dhoni, he failed to score a half-century in an entire year in 2018 for the first time since 2005. Although MS Dhoni scored a fifty in the series opener, he consumed a lot of deliveries leading to severe criticism. There was a lot of pressure and expectations on both these players to perform well and regain their form. They didn’t disappoint the fans one bit in the second game of the series.

In the second ODI, Bhuvi picked up four wickets in 10 overs and gave away just 45 runs. At a stage when Australia was looking to push the score beyond 325, his brilliance helped restrict them to 298. In the chase, MS Dhoni forged good partnerships with Kohli and Dinesh Karthik. He took the team over the line and showed the fans that he was not over yet. In the process, he registered his 69th ODI fifty.

During the first innings of the game, an interesting incident took place between both these players. In the 32nd over that Kuldeep Yadav was bowling, Shaun Marsh hit a delivery towards the point fielder. It was Bhuvi guarding that position. As the ball was reaching him, MS Dhoni shouted ‘ghoomega’ (the ball will turn). But, the pacer failed to understand the instructions from the keeper right in time and ended up conceding an extra run.
