The playing eleven for Australia, the hosts, was announced at least a day prior to each of the first three Test matches until today. As of now, the series tally stands at 2-1 with India leading. The visitors, who have never won a Test series on Australian soil before, have already secured the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The home team is now keen on saving the series from India’s clasps. On the eve of the game, Australia captain Tim Paine has clarified that the playing XI for the Test match starting on 3rd January will not be announced in advance. Paine has voiced his decision to delay the playing XI announcement on account of playing it safe and to be able to decide on a “balanced side”.

Australia want to have a look at the pitch first on the morning of the game and then choose the side accordingly. Earlier they had announced the inclusion of Queensland batsman Marnus Labuschagne into the squad. The SCG pitch is reputed to support spin and both teams are looking to adjust their choices accordingly. Labuschange also gives the Aussies an option of a part-time leg-spinner.

Reason behind the delay

“There’s an ongoing discussion for the last day or two but we’ll have a final look at the wicket and we’ll have our last chat then,” Paine said at a press conference on the eve of the fourth Test. “We’re not too far away. As I said all along, we’ll be looking to pick the best XI that we think is the best combination to win this Test and the wicket will play a part in that,” he added.

Although there’s no confirmation on Aaron Finch’s status, it’s most likely that Usman Khawaja will open. Paine has backed Peter Handscomb as well considering the fact that he is a good player against spin. As India have announced their 13-man squad and as it is likely that they will play two spinners, these options will come in handy for Australia ahead of the fourth and final Test that starts on January 3 at the SCG.
