Youngsters Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant had a dream start to their respective Test careers. While Pant just carried on from where he left off in England, Shaw was mighty impressive with a century in his debut Test against Windies. It hasn’t just impressed the fans but the team management as well. As skipper Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri give preference to current form over reputation and thus the duo has a lot to look forward to.
This might as well confirm a berth for these two players for the tour to Australia. The 29-year-old skipper, during the post-match press conference after the second Test, hinted the same. He said that he was really happy with the way the youngsters had grabbed their chances.
Prithvi Shaw was outstanding, Rishabh Pant was really fearless
Kohli heaped a lot of praise on both Shaw and Pant for their stellar performances. While the opener scored 237 runs in the 3 innings against Windies, the keeper-batsman piled up 184 runs. He also earned for himself the ‘Man of the Series’ award having scored most runs in the series. However, Pant was unfortunate to miss out on two centuries as he got out on 92 in both the innings that he played.
“Prithvi was outstanding, Rishabh was really fearless. I am really happy that these guys have grabbed their chances,” Virat said.
However, he was wary that the conditions were not as challenging as they might get in the future. But, the skipper added that having runs under their belt will help them immensely. He stated that it was important for Pant and Shaw to realise that they were capable of scoring runs at the Test level.
“I know the conditions were not as challenging as they might get in future, but in Test cricket, the first and the most important thing is confidence and understanding that you can score runs at the Test level,” said Kohli.
“From that point of view, (I’m) very happy that these guys have taken their chance so well,” he further added.
