Australia breathed a sigh of relief after ending their seven-match ODI losing streak and their six-match ODI losing streak over South Africa. This meant the three-match series went down to the decider at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Both games in this series turned out to be low-scoring ones but the 3rd game could be easier for the batsmen. David Miller’s fifty in the previous game is the only individual fifty in this ODI series thus far recorded by either of teams.

South Africa have considered a rotation policy ahead of the next year’s World Cup that prompted them to pick Dwaine Pretorius ahead of Andile Phehlukwayo. They could bring in Chris Morris in place of a pacer to strengthen their batting. Australia, on the other hand, might bring back Nathan Coulter-Nile for Adam Zampa. The leg-spinner was expensive in the previous game and Hobart’s short square boundaries could see him go for runs yet another time.

Match Details:

The third ODI match between Australia and South Africa will be hosted by the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. The match starts at 1:50 PM local time (2:50 AM GMT) (8:20 AM IST).

Last five ODI matches:

Australia: W, L, L, L, L.

South Africa: L, W, W, W, W.

Pitch Condition/Report:

The Bellerive Oval last hosted an ODI in 2015 and has produced some high-scoring games, going by the recent trend. In the four ODIs that this venue hosted in 2015, one was a 300+ chase by the Aussies, a 5-run defeat for Zimbabwe chasing 332 and a total of 350+ for Sri Lanka against Ireland. A game between Scotland and Australia turned to be a low-scorer as the Scottish team made 130 in only 25.4 overs. Two of the three Australia’s domestic One-Day Cup matches in 2017/18 witnessed scores of 330+.

Squads:

Australia: D Arcy Short, Aaron Finch(c), Travis Head, Chris Lynn, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Alex Carey(w), Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa.

South Africa: Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock (w), Reeza Hendricks, Faf du Plessis(c), David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen, Farhaan Behardien, Chris Morris, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi.

Probable XI:

Australia: Aaron Finch (C), Travis Head, Shaun Marsh, Chris Lynn, Glenn Maxwell, Alex Carey (w), Marcus Stoinis, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Coulter-Nile/Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

South Africa: Quinton de Kock (w), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis (C), David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen, Dwaine Pretorius, Chris Morris/Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn, Imran Tahir.

Power Picks:

Mitchell Starc and Kagiso Rabada were at their best in the previous game despite turning a bit expensive. Aaron Finch anchored the Australian innings in the second ODI by staying away from taking risks. Pat Cummins was too tough to handle for South African batsmen in the first two games where he conceded at less than three an over.

Best Playing XI:

Quinton de Kock, Aaron Finch, Chris Lynn, Reeza Hendricks, Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Imran Tahir, Pat Cummins, Dale Steyn.

Captain and Vice-Captain Selection:

Chris Lynn hasn’t scored big yet and the Hobart ODI could help him seal his position in the ODI format. He can be a multiplier option among batsmen alongside Faf du Plessis’, whose record against Australia qualifies him for a multiplier role. Marcus Stoinis has regularly picked up wickets and can come up with a decent outing with the bat. He can be a reliable vice-captain option alongside Dale Steyn.

Expert Advice:

There is very little difference in Quinton de Kock and Alex Carey in this series and hardly matters whom we are picking. However, Carey’s lower price-tag helps us to take a player from any other category with a high price-tag.

Probable Winners:

Australia’s batting might edge over that of South Africa’s if the game turns out to be a high-scoring one.
