Australian cricket team is currently in tatters after the ball-tampering saga broke out during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town last week. Cameron Bancroft was caught scuffing the ball with a yellow coloured tape on which he was using the granules of the pitch to rough up one side of the ball and help the ball reverse. The incident sent the shockwaves around the cricketing world as it was later admitted by Steve Smith that the leadership group were aware of the same. However, Wasim Jaffer is also surprised with these tactics the Australians opted for.

Cricket Australia (CA) is set to take strict action on the players involved and it is likely that they will suspend the captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner for a period of 12 months. Also, there are reports that Darren Lehmann might be the first casualty of this scandal as he is expected to resign as the coach of the team late on Tuesday. At the same time, CA will also give its verdict on the players as James Sutherland has flown to the rainbow nation for the same.

They should be punished

Veteran Indian cricketer, Jaffer, believes that such actions on the field are not at all acceptable and the involved Australian players should and will be punished.

“I think whatever happened is not acceptable without a doubt and we don’t know what punishment they’ll get. They planned to go against the rules of the game and then felt embarrassed after being caught. The appropriate people will look into the matter and they will get the punishment for the same,” he said while speaking exclusively to CricTracker.

The 40-year-old who represented India in 31 Tests was also surprised that a team like Australia which possesses such a strong bowling line-up opted for unethical tactics.

“They have such a strong bowling line-up and recently they have beaten England so easily in the Ashes. I don’t understand the reason behind their actions. They are one of the strongest bowling lineups going around and I’m surprised that they have gone in with this tactic,” Jaffer concluded.
