The chances of India winning the second ODI during the innings break weren’t too high as the home side could get just 252 runs on the board. That is not the total you look forward to after winning the toss and electing to bat first. Kohli’s 92 kept them in line to amass a 280 plus total but a mini-collapse, where India lost 3 wickets for 18 runs including Dhoni and Kohli, the hosts fell short by at least 30 runs.
It was Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s new-ball burst which got the hosts back in the contest as he made the ball to talk under lights with a bit of help due to the brief rain spell. After the early blows, it was time for the wrist spinners to inflict damage on a surface which had started to spin. Chahal bowled a challenging spell and was lucky to get a wicket off a full toss. He followed it up with a beauty to send Maxwell on his way after he threatened to smack the spinners out of the attack. To Dhoni’s credit, he made the dismissal possible thanks to his quick glove work behind the stumps.
Kuldeep Yadav’s confidence was severely dented when Maxwell hit him for consecutive sixes early in his spell. But the chinaman bowler made amends for it later in his spell by picking the first hattrick in 26 years for an Indian cricketer in limited overs cricket. Both wrist spinners – Chahal and Kuldeep – have picked 10 wickets collectively in 2 games and have been all over the visiting side.
Marcus Stoinis and Steve Smith fought hard but couldn’t take their side home. The former remained unbeaten and made a case for himself to bat higher in the order. He struck the ball cleanly and handled the spinners well to score 62 runs in 65 balls. Australia really needs to arrest the slide as the next game in Indore is a do-or-die game for Smith’s men. They have to find a way to counter the spin threat and look to build partnerships, especially in the middle overs. For India, everything seems to be going their way these days. They have identified the best combination which is paying rich dividends to them in colored clothing.
Twitter exploded after India scripted a relatively easy win and we bring you the best tweets during the game:
