Sri Lanka have annihilated Bangladesh by 215 runs on the third day of the second and final Test match of the series. The visitors also became the first team to defeat the Tigers in home series in Tests since 2015. The spinners wreaked an absolute havoc on a spitting surface and to be fair to the hosts, it was impossible to bat on the wicket. Akila Dananjaya also registered the best figures for a Sri Lankan debutant in Tests by taking a five-wicket haul in the second innings.

Earlier in the morning, Bangladesh cleaned up the last couple of wickets of Sri Lanka in the first half-hour. Taijul Islam took both the wickets as he first castled Suranga Lakmal and then pinned Rangana Herath in front off the next delivery itself as the visitors were bundled out for 226 with a lead of 338 runs. Roshen Silva once again remained unbeaten scoring 70 runs and was impeccable throughout the series with the bat for his team.

Taijul was the best bowler for the hosts as he ended with the figures of 4/76. Mustafizur Rahman took three wickets while Mehidy Hasan scalped a couple.

Akila and Herath spin SL to victory

Bangladesh came out to bat with the clear intentions of attacking the bowlers of the opposition as it was near impossible to keep defending on the crumbling pitch. Tamim Iqbal was the first one to bite the dust in the second over itself as Dilruwan Perera trapped him in front of the stumps. However, Mominul Haque and Imrul Kayes kept on playing their shots and stitched a streaky stand of 46 runs for the second wicket. But the latter was sent packing by Herath just before the lunch on 17.

The procession continued after the lunch as the debutant Dananjaya took a sensational five-wicket haul in just 5 overs. He took key wickets of Liton Das and Mahmudullah as the lower-middle order collapsed like a pack of cards and much like the first innings. Bangladesh crumbled from being 100/4 to 123/10 only for the last two wickets to add 19 runs.

Fittingly, Herath finished the game by picking Taijul which was his 415th scalp in Tests and also became the most successful left-arm bowler in the longest format of the game. He went past the legendary Wasim Akram who had ended his career 414 wickets.

Sri Lanka thumped the home side by 215 runs and bowled them out twice in 75.1 overs while they themselves batted for more than 130 overs which eventually made the difference. Roshen Silva was the star for them as he was awarded both player of the match and the series after scoring 235 runs and being the flesh in the thorn for Bangladesh. Sri Lanka also won the two-match series by 1-0.

Both the teams will now face each other in another two-match rubber in the shortest format of the game starting on February 15.
