Prior to the ODI series, Bangladesh were deemed as the favourites since West Indies had a second-string team. In the first game at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, the Tigers showed dominance, especially with the ball in hand. Mustafizur Rahman started the carnage after which Shakib Al Hasan unfolded mayhem in the middle-overs. Even debutant Hasan Mahmud was decent.

Barring Kyle Mayers and Rovman Powell, no other batter could pose a threat to the home team. Though the visiting team held back Bangladesh in their run-chase for 33.5 overs, the fate of the game was pretty much known. But Akeal Hosein was a bright spot for them as he got three wickets. West Indies need to pull their socks up if they have to win the next game and stay in the series.

The second and penultimate match of the series is set to be played on Friday, January 22 in Mirpur itself. The track isn’t going to change much and the spinners are again expected to come into play. Keeping in mind the playing conditions, a high-scoring match doesn’t seem to be in the offing by any means. In the meantime, Bangladesh would be looking for a slightly better show with the bat.

Playing Combinations for BAN vs WI

Bangladesh

The Tigers may stick with their same lineup. Tamim Iqbal looked patient and scored 44 runs off 69 balls with seven fours. He looked at ease before becoming Jason Mohammed’s maiden international victim. Najmul Hossain Shanto might get another chance after he perished for a score of a single.

Shakib performed with the ball and he’ll be looking for some form with the bat as well. The Tigers have the batting depth in case there’s a collapse. In the pace attack, Rubel Hossain went wicketless last time and he’ll be looking to make amends. The other bowlers are in reasonable enough form.

Probable XI

Tamim Iqbal (C), Liton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Mahmudullah, Soumya Sarkar, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Hasan Mahmud

Bench: Afif Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Mithun, Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mohammad Saifuddin

West Indies

West Indies need to sort their batting out in order to stay alive in the series. Sunil Ambris, one of their gun openers, perished to fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman after smoking a six. Joshua da Silva, who’s done well in practice games for the Caribbean teams, couldn’t survive the heat either.

Their major problem was partnerships. Mayers and Powell put on 59 runs for the sixth wicket, but apart from that, the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals. In the bowling department, Hosein was the best of the lot. Pacer Alzarri Joseph and Mohammed were economical and didn’t give much.

Probable XI

Sunil Ambris, Andre McCarthy, Joshua da Silva (WK), Kyle Mayers, Nkrumah Bonner, Akeal Hosein, Jason Mohammed (C), Rovman Powell, Raymon Reifer, Alzarri Joseph, Chemar Holder

Bench: Kjorn Ottley, Jahmar Hamilton, Keon Harding

Players to watch out for

Shakib Al Hasan- Bangladesh

Shakib Al Hasan, before Wednesday’s match, didn’t play a single international match for 16 months due to the ban imposed on him by the ICC. After playing for Gemcon Khulna in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup, he showed his class in national colours.

He picked up four wickets, conceding only eight runs in his 7.2 overs. The Magura-born would now be looking forward to performing with the bat in hand as well.

Akeal Hosein- West Indies

Akeal Hosein made his debut for the West Indies in the opening ODI of the series. However, he didn’t show any signs of nervousness by any means. In fact, he was the only Caribbean bowler, who completed his quota of 10 overs.

In his spell, the left-arm spinner picked up the wickets of Liton Das, Shanto, and Shakib. The youngster will be looking to do something similar even in the next encounter.
