He also pointed out that the likes of Mustafizur and Mehidy have a lot of talent and should be persisted with.

Bangladesh cricket team has emerged as one of the workhorses in the international arena. The times are gone when they used to put up a spirited show once in a blue moon. They stretched India in the Asia Cup final recently and have qualified for the knockout stages in the recent ICC events as well. Their senior players have stepped up every time the country needed them but Nazmul Abedeen feels that apart from them Bangladesh don’t have international quality players.

The likes of Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza, Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah are around for the most parts of the decade now. More often than not, their experience helps the Tigers in crunch situations. But the time will come when all these players will have to retire and then the real test of the team will start.

The mentor of Shakib, Tamim and Rahim, Nazmul Abedeen feels that the country has some talented players but at the moment, apart from the fantastic five, they don’t have anyone matching international standards.

The goal of the players is different

“We might get one or two international quality players once a year, so in five years we might replace four to five players who will be international standard. We can see a glimpse of that in Miraz and Mustafizur. At the moment we don’t have 11 international quality players as a majority of the youngsters had the goal of becoming a national player rather an international player,” he said according to bdcrictime.

Abedeen also went on to highlight the pressure which the youngsters have to deal with when they aren’t playing well which wasn’t the case with Shakib or Tamim. “The transition period of Shakib, Tamim and others were different from the current set of players. The current players are facing big challenges like having to become champions in the Asia Cup — that was not the case previously.”

“Suppose if Shakib does not play three games, he will return and still be comfortable, but if Liton does not play three games he will be confused as everyone will start talking about his negatives. So those who are mature know how to handle such pressure. It’s our environment which does not allow them to mature,” he added further.
