Bangladesh is scheduled to play a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium next month. The series starts from June 3 and will end on June 6. Previously, the matches were decided to be played in the ODI format. However, in April, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) decided to change the format in a bid to prepare for the 2020 World T20.

Meanwhile, BCB Chairman Akram Khan mentioned that they will send their top players for the tour. “We will send our full-strength team. For us, every tournament is important. We have been doing well in Tests and ODIs, and now we are improving in T20s as well. So, we will field our main team against Afghanistan, which is also a good opponent,” Akram was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

The board has also appointed Gary Kirsten, who is currently the mentor of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, as a consultant. “Kirsten is coming as a consultant after the IPL. We are lucky to have someone like him on board. He will help us in taking our cricket forward. We will get a clearer idea on the roadmap once we talk to him here,” Khan added.

The tumultuous phase of Bangladesh cricket

Bangladesh cricket has been without a coach ever since Bangladesh’s dismal tour of South Africa. They were beaten black and blue in the Test, ODI and T20I series following which Chandika Hathurasingha stepped down as the head coach. In March, Bangladesh took part in a triangular T20 tournament versus India and Sri Lanka. They progressed to the Final and were beaten by India.

They managed to beat Sri Lanka twice in the tournament and give India a run for their money in the Final of the Nidahas Trophy. However, Dinesh Karthik’s blitz in the dying stages of the match denied them a victory. The team will be looking to put up a decent show in the upcoming series in India.
