Bangladesh cruised to yet another ODI win against Zimbabwe as they thumped the visitors to a record 169-run defeat in the Sylhet ODI. Liton Das scored 126 from only 105 balls with 13 fours and 2 sixes before walking off the field after suffering cramps. Contributions from other batsmen saw the hosts finish with 321/6.

Zimbabwe stood no chance in the chase as the fall of wickets began from the very 2nd over. No player except for debutant Wesley Madhevere (35) failed to even reach 25 runs during the chase as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 152.

All the statistical highlights from Bangladesh’s record 169-run win against Zimbabwe in the first ODI:

Bangladesh’s biggest ODI win:

169 – The 169-run win in this match is now the biggest win in terms of runs for Bangladesh. Their previous biggest ODI victory in terms of runs was 163 runs when they defeated Sri Lanka during the 2018 ODI Tri-series at home.

Zimbabwe’s losing streaks:

14 – Bangladesh has won all the 14 ODI matches they played against Zimbabwe since the start of 2014. The last instance of Zimbabwe defeating Bangladesh in an ODI match was way back in the 2013 home series. In fact, Zimbabwe is currently on a losing streak of 17 matches in ODIs against the Tigers in Bangladesh.

6 – This was Zimbabwe’s 6th consecutive defeat in the ODI format as they lost to the Netherlands by 0-2 and against to Ireland by 0-3 during their last year tour of Europe.

Interestingly, this was Bangladesh’s first ODI win since defeating Afghanistan in the 2019 CWC. Bangladesh lost their last two matches in that tournament against India and Pakistan respectively and later they were whitewashed by Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka soon after the World Cup last year.

Bangladesh’s highest total against Zimbabwe:

321/6 – The total of 321/8 is now the highest in ODI format for Bangladesh against Zimbabwe. Their previous highest ODI total against Zimbabwe was 320/8 during the 2009 Bulawayo ODI.

This is also the first time Bangladesh has posted 300+ in a home ODI against Zimbabwe. The previous highest total for Bangladesh against Zimbabwe in a home ODI was 297/6 during the 2014 series.

A big hundred from Liton:

126* – Liton Das’ unbeaten 126 is now the 2nd highest ODI score by a designated wicketkeeper for Bangladesh. Mushfiqur Rahim’s 144 against Sri Lanka in the 2018 Asia Cup game stands on the top.

Interestingly, Liton kept wickets in place of Rahim during the 2018 match as the latter suffered a rib injury while Mushfiqur kept wickets on Sunday for Liton who suffered cramps and also got hit on the helmet.

A day of milestones for Mortaza:

100 – Mashrafe Mortaza completed 100 wickets as captain in ODI cricket with the two wickets he picked on Sunday. Only Wasim Akram (158), Shaun Pollock (134), Imran Khan (131) and Jason Holder (101) have claimed over 100 ODI wickets as captains before Mortaza.

50 – Mortaza’s 100th ODI wicket as captain was also his 50th in this format as captain while playing at home. Shaun Pollock (83 in South Africa) is the only other captain with 50+ ODI wickets at home.

700 – Mashrafe Mortaza also completed 700 wickets in his professional career with the two wickets he picked. Mortaza claimed 135 FC wickets, 415 List A wickets and 146 wickets in T20s.

An interesting start to Madhevere’s career:

4 – Wesley Madhevere is now only the 4th player to score 30+ runs while batting in top 5 and also pick at least one wicket while bowling as early as 1st change on debut in Men’s ODI cricket. Keerthi Ranasinghe of Sri Lanka against Pakistan in 1996 was the first to achieve this feat. Netherlands’ Darron Reekers and Ryan ten Doeschate replicated this feat when they made their ODI debut together in the 2006 Amstelveen ODI against Sri Lanka.

A field day with milestones for Bangladesh batters:

4026Mahmudullah completed 4000 runs in ODI cricket when his individual score was past six in this match. He is now only the 4th player from Bangladesh to amass 4000 ODI runs.

4005 – Liton Das completed 4000 runs in List A cricket by virtue of his unbeaten century in Sylhet. Liton now has scored 4005 runs across 108 innings with help of nine hundreds and 19 fifties.

9009 – Mushfiqur Rahim went past 9000 runs in List A cricket with the 19 runs he scored in the first ODI. Rahim has an average of 39 in his 297-match List A career where he scored 11 hundreds and 56 fifties.
