Melbourne Stars got their second successive win of the BBL 2020-21 as they got the better of Sydney Thunder by 22 runs on Saturday. Marcus Stoinis (61 off 37) and Glenn Maxwell (39 off 29) put the Stars at 92/1 at halfway stage but lost seven wickets for 77 runs in the second half to finish on 169/8. Sydney Thunder made a decent start in the chase making 90/1 in 12 overs but a middle-order collapse saw them finish with only 147/9.

Stars’ winning streak against Thunder:

5Melbourne Stars now have won each of their last five matches against the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League. The winning streak of Stars began after their defeat to the Thunder by 15 runs at the Manuka Oval in December 2018.


Stoinis tops the Stars’ list:

1792 – Marcus Stoinis has become the leading run-getter of Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League yet again as he outscored Glenn Maxwell on Saturday and went past his tally of 1787 runs.

14 – The fifty during STA vs THU game was Marcus Stoinis’ 14th score of 50+ runs in the Big Bash League; all of them coming for Melbourne Stars only. These are now the most number of fifty-plus scores in the BBL by any player for Stars equalling Glenn Maxwell’s 14 fifties.

4 – Stoinis is now only the 3rd player with as many as four fifties in the Big Bash against the Sydney Thunder. Chris Lynn has struck as many as five fifties while Kevin Pietersen has four 50s from only five innings against the Thunder. Stoinis scored 332 runs at an average of 41.5 against Sydney Thunder across nine BBL innings thus far.


Zampa’s economical spell:

2/10 – Adam Zampa conceded only 10 runs during his four overs against the Thunder which is now the most economical spell by a spinner for the Melbourne Stars. Zampa’s 10 runs are also the 4th fewest by any bowler for the Stars in a BBL game. (Min: 4 overs)

Lasith Malinga gave away only seven runs against Perth Scorchers in the 2012-13 season game while Malinga and James Faulkner conceded only 8 and 9 runs respectively during the 2013-14 season game against the Adelaide Strikers.

  

3 – Only the 3rd time Adam Zampa has won the player of the match in the Big Bash League thus far. His first two awards came for the Melbourne Stars against the Melbourne Renegades in 2016-17 and 2019-20 seasons.


A record duck for Sams:

7 – Daniel Sams now has been dismissed for a duck on as many as seven occasions in the Big Bash League. These are now the joint-most ducks for any player in the BBL history equaling Ben Duck.
