The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) recently announced the 16-member squad for the upcoming tri-nation ODI series involving Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. The series is set to get underway on January 15. It will mark as the first international fixture of the calendar year of 2018 for all the three participating nations. Needless to concede why the BCB is very keen on leaving an impression on their first home assignment.

The chief selectors made some bold selections for the series. This included the omission of two regular faces in the side – pace bowler Taskin Ahmed and opening batsman Soumya Sarkar. As per the recent quotes in bdcrictime, the chief selector of the BCB justified the omission of the two senior cricketers from the series.

Commenting on Soumya Sarkar, the chief selector remarked that the southpaw has been playing across the three formats for quite a long time. However, his inability to prove his mettle on a consistent basis has cost him a place in the side. The selectors further added that Sarkar, however, remains to be in the scheme of things for future fixtures.

“Soumya has been playing in all the formats for quite a time now. I have no question about his ability. But as he is not consistent, we have decided to give him a break. Soumya is in our system. If he become consistent again, then we will think about him,” quoted BCB’s Chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu.

South Africa tour costs Taskin his place

Meanwhile, the recent dismal show in South Africa sees Taskin Ahmed lose out his place in the side. Nannu remarked that Taskin failed to impress on the South African tour where the conditions ideally suited his style of bowling. The BCB wants Taskin to work on his game in the domestic fixtures. After the tri-series, Bangladesh will host Sri Lanka in a Test and T20I series as well.

“Taskin was not in form in the South Africa tour. It is now important for him to play domestic matches. That’s why we dropped him,” Nannu explained justifying the exclusion of Taskin Ahmed.
