All eyes were on the media centre of the headquarters of the BCCI where the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) interviewed the candidates for the position of the head coach of Indian cricket team. With the interviews lined up from 1 pm, it was expected that the CAC, would arrive at a decision, run it through the board as well as the CoA and announce the name by evening but that hasn’t happened.

When Sourav Ganguly walked out with acting Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Amitabh Chaudhury the scribes were excited and so were the fans. But all Ganguly said was they are not hurrying into things and will take their time to make the decision in consultation with skipper Virat Kohli.

“There is no hurry to appoint the coach, as it is a long-term prospect, at least until the end of the 2019 World Cup,” Ganguly said. He also mentioned that Kohli had no involvement in the procedure thus far but will be given an opportunity to make the choice.

The answer everyone who has an interest in Indian cricket wants to know is, when will the coach be picked? “Once he (Kohli), the members of the team are on the same page,” Ganguly added. “Virat also needs to know how coaches would function,” he said.

Virat Kohli to choose between two options

After the press conference reports via BCCI sources emerged that Virat will be given two names to pick from and most likely it will be either former Indian opener Virender Sehwag or Tom Moody.

Now the CAC, BCCI and the CoA will wait for the skipper to return who will head to the United States of America from the Caribbean for a short vacation. GS Vivek an associate editor with a leading news channel posted on Twitter that Kohli will return on July 17 whereas the team will leave for Sri Lanka on July 20 since they are scheduled to play a practice game from July 21 ahead of the series opener on 26 at Galle.

Meanwhile, one man who is set to retain his job is Sanjay Bangar who has played different roles in the team, as batting coach, assistant coach as well as the head coach when no one has been at the helm. There is also a possibility that Bangar will lead the team into the tour and the new coach will join them ahead of the limited-overs leg.
