The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly sitting over the letter of resignation turned in by Indian cricket team fitness trainer Shankar Basu. The latter has been associated with the Indian team since the start of their tour of Sri Lanka and has also had a direct impact on some of the players.

However, prior to the conclusion of the fifth day’s play at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Basu turned in his resignation letter to the board. The Board was clearly reluctant given the fact that England will make a comeback in the ODI series scheduled to begin in January and losing a trainer in the caliber of Mr. Basu could very well be a blow.

Shankar Basu runs a very successful Fitness studio in Chennai and is also popular in the sports world having worked with certain athletes across various sports as well. Moreover, he has also had a massive impact on the Indian team and has accounted for the fitness of most of the Indian cricketers in the world including Virat Kohli who seems to be enjoying his workout sessions.

Basu also works with Kohli as a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. However, in recent times, a few questions have indeed been raised about Basu’s programs especially the intensity of the workouts for some of the players. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, KL Rahul, Wriddhiman Saha, and Mohammad Shami have been on the receiving end of a few injuries in recent times, perhaps one of the reasons for Basu’s decision.

“No player complained about his methods. But a few did raise questions about the intensity and the program, which is normal because for each player the routine is different. The team’s fitness has increased by leaps and bounds, and it is a huge shock that Basu resigned. We are still sitting over the letter,” BCCI sources told Express.
