MS Dhoni was included in A grade in the revised contract announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier this week. While he missed out on the newly introduced pay grade A+, there were rumours that the veteran being relegated from the top category. However, the BCCI official has revealed the reason for the same now which should settle the matter for once and forever.

Dhoni has hung up his boots from Test cricket but is still a vital cog of both ODI and T20I squads ahead of the World Cup next year in England. The top grade A+ includes the likes of Virat Kohli, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Shikhar Dhawan who play across formats for the country. They will earn Rs. 7 Crores annually while Dhoni will get paid Rs. 5 Crores as he is in the pay grade below them.

Here’s the reason

The BCCI official cleared that the Indian board has paid more to the players who play more for the country while saying that the top cricketers were taken into consideration while taking the decision. “Its a simple logic that selectors have applied. Play more and get paid more. The five in question are indispensable in all three formats right now. They deserved to be paid more. Also Ravi Shastri, Kohli and Dhoni have been taken into confidence,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.

He also added the reason behind the players who were kept in the ‘A’ pay grade clearing that the one who are certainties at least in one of the formats have been handed over the contracts in the group. “The second group comprises players who are certainties in at least one format like Saha and Pujara. They are in second group because of their dependability in at least one format,” the official added.
