The COVID situation in India has been going from bad to worse, with the nation recording over 8 lakh new infections over the past three days. The enormous upshot in the numbers has forced various state governments to impose stricter regulations to battle the second wave of the deadly virus, although the results have not followed to the nation’s liking.

Despite the vaccine rollout at a mass level, the cases are continuing to rise and the nation is witnessing the highest rate of infections. While the unprecedented nationwide lockdown last year was able to bring the situation in India’s grasp, the ensuing detrimental economic impacts have led the government to avoid taking that route even as the conditions have worsened to the extent of patients unable to secure hospital beds for treatments.

Notably, many sportspersons, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Sachin Tendulkar, Irfan Pathan, Harmanpreet Kaur, amongst others, have fallen ill, making one realize that the virus, perhaps has got little to do with immunity. Amid such ruckus, the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Team India captain Virat Kohli has appealed to citizens of India to follow Covid-19 protocols and “wear a mask, keep social distance & hand hygiene” in a video posted by the Delhi Police.

Please maintain social distancing: Virat Kohli

“VIRAT KOHLI @imVkohli Team India Captain appeals to citizens to observe #covid protocol & #lockdown to fight the current wave. Wear a mask, keep social distance & hand hygiene. Cooperate with #DelhiPolice & behave responsibly, he says, for victory over corona as #IndiaFightsBack,” tweeted Delhi Police on Monday.

“As you all know, Covid cases are on the rise in India again. If you’re venturing out for essential services, please wear a mask. Please maintain social distancing,” Kohli said in the video. “Please keep sanitizing your hands. Taking these precautions is very necessary,” he added.

The state governments across the nation have been urging the citizens to wear masks, and practice social distancing to the greatest degree possible while ensuring that they do not leave their house unless there is a sheer necessity. As per the latest data from covid19india.org, India has over 20 lakh active cases, while over 12 crore doses of vaccine have been administered in the nation.
