The Indian Premier League has acted as a source of joy and excitement for its fans over the years. There have been many nail-biting matches where the thrill reached the next level. However, there are also some matches when one of the teams completely dominates the other one, leaving no chance for a contest. Sometimes these results are catalysed by a particular player who gives an extraordinary performance. In this article, we will be discussing 5 IPL matches where the biggest margin of victory by runs was recorded.

5. In 2013 by Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Pune Warriors India – 130

This match is remembered for one of the best knocks played in T20 history. Chris Gayle smashed 175 runs off 66 balls with the help of 17 sixes and 13 fours which powered RCB to a mammoth total of 263/5 in 20 overs.

Pune Warriors, on the other hand, had no answers to it with their batting as they could only manage a score of 133/9 losing the match by 130 runs. The Sahara-owned franchise have this as one of the many infamous and unwanted records against their name.

4. In 2015 by Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Kings XI Punjab – 138

This game also included a masterclass innings from ‘universe boss’ Chris Gayle. RCB scored 226/3 while batting first in this game with the help of Gayle’s 117-run blistering knock which included 12 sixes and 7 fours. AB de Villiers also contributed with the bat, scoring 47 runs off just 24 balls.

 In response to this target, the Punjab team got decimated for just 88 runs in 13.4 overs and lost the match by 138 runs. KXIP, now Punjab Kings, will have a tough gig in the 2024 edition. Punjab Kings schedule is really hectic, and they have to play really well throughout the tournament to win the elusive title.

3. In 2008 by Kolkata Knight Riders vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2008 – 140

Brendon McCullum set the stage on fire when he smashed 158 runs off 73 balls in the inaugural match of the first year of IPL. KKR put up a total of 222/3 in their first innings, and RCB had a miserable day with the bat as well, scoring only 82 runs in reply. With a win by 140 runs, KKR led the very foundation of the Indian Premier League with a bang, and got the world talking about the future of the league, which in future turned out to be the biggest for the game.

2. In 2016 by Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Gujarat Lions, 2016 – 144 

This was the match when cricket fans enjoyed watching two greats, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, smashing fours and sixes for fun. Both of them slammed hundreds, with RCB scoring 248/3 in 20 overs. Virat scored 109 runs off 55 balls, while de Villiers played an incredible knock of 129 runs off just 52 balls with the help of 12 sixes and 10 fours. Chasing the massive target of 249 runs, the Gujarat team could not compete at all as they were all out for 104 runs, losing the clash by 144 runs.

1. In 2017 by Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals, 2017 – 146

In this IPL match played in 2017, Mumbai Indians posted a big total of 212/3 while batting first. For them, Lendl Simmons and Kieron Pollard played important knocks, with both scoring over 60 runs at a good strike rate. Chasing this total, the Delhi team got bundled out for just 66 runs, losing the match by 146 runs.
