Brad Haddin urges inexperienced bowlers to step up

Former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Brad Haddin knows a thing or two about touring South Africa and playing on the bouncy and fast-paced wickets. However, in light of Australia’s plight in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa, Haddin has stated his anguish about the way the Aussies have gone about their plans in the first two ODIs.

Brad Haddin, who called it quits earlier last year went on to state that Steve Smith and his deputy David Warner would have to speak to the bowlers about stepping up their performances in the upcoming ODIs. Both matches have seen the likes of Joe Mennie and David Worrall make their respective debuts in the matches thus far.

“At the end of the game I heard Davey (David Warner) and Steve Smith talking about how our bowlers need to step up a little bit,” Haddin said on The Big Sports Breakfast radio on Tuesday (October 4). “But we had a couple of guys on debut, we had all our senior batters there. I think the batters were a little bit disappointing, to be honest.”

Brad Haddin also went on to be brutally honest about the senior members stepping up to the plate in the Australian side.

“It sort of happened a little bit in the Sri Lanka series with Nathan Lyon as well,” he said. “I think the batters need to have a bit of a look at themselves. We’ve got all our senior bats there, we’re not missing anyone from that end. The fifties aren’t going to cut it. We need guys like Davey to get a start and go on and get some big scores.

Finally, speaking about the new bowlers in the side, Haddin said, “I don’t mind guys getting an opportunity at the international level,” he remarked. “Those guys did really, really well in the ‘A’ series, but it shows the jump that’s needed, the difference between ‘A’ cricket and playing for your country. It is a big jump to play international cricket and guys have got to get used to it if they want to make a name for themselves.”
