Eden Gardens in Kolkata is one of the most iconic stadiums in the country. It has good seating capacity for the spectators and has witnessed some exciting matches over the years.
The Eden Gardens has been the home ground for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. Through 2017, it has hosted the highest number of international matches in India- 82. In 2016, a bell was added to the stadium to ring in the start of day’s play for test cricket and start of the match for ODI & T20I matches.
The groundsmen play a key role in keeping the stadium in good shape during the matches. They ensure that there is minimum stoppage when rain affects the game. A stadium needs good groundsmen to keep the stadium in good condition. The ground staff of the Eden Gardens did an excellent job during the IPL as the stadium was adjudged the best venue after the IPL 11 closing ceremony.
A much-needed change by CAB
Another good news for the groundsmen is that the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has decided to bring them under the payroll. “Taking their performances into consideration, the association has approved to take them under the payroll as per the norms.” CAB joint-secretary Avishek Dalmiya was quoted as saying by sportstarlive.com. This is a great news for them as they will be motivated to work even harder which will eventually benefit the game of cricket.
“For a long time, they had put forward requests to make them permanent. Of course, they have made us proud,” Dalmiya added. Ten years ago, the groundsmen had threatened to commit suicide due to payment issues. Through this move, the CAB has ensured that such situations do not arise again. The CAB will also include the groundsmen employed at the Jadavpur University Second Campus ground and the security personnel under its payroll.
