The ousted Australia batsman Callum Ferguson has signed a three-year deal with Sydney Thunders in Big Bash League (BBL). The seventh edition of BBL is all set to commence in the next month with the number of international cricketers participating in the competition. However, the 33-year-old cricketer was excited after signing the deal and was looking forward to his stint with the franchise.

Ferguson has previously played with Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers in the earlier seasons of BBL. He was also part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he was picked up by now-defunct Pune Warriors. The South Australian has also represented his country albeit for a brief period across all formats.

Lot of things attracted me to Thunders

Callum Ferguson was delighted to get onto the field for his new franchise and hoped to enjoy his time with the talented group. “I’ve known Huss for a long time, we got on really well when we played together. I’ve played with Shane Watson, Ben Rohrer and Aiden Blizzard. There’s a few guys who I’ve had a really good time playing with or against in the past and I’ve had really good dealings with all of them. There’s a lot of things that attracted me to Sydney Thunder, Sydney’s a great city and I’m looking forward to the experience of being a senior player in a young and talented group,” he said.

He was all praise of Paddy Upton who is the head coach of Sydney Thunders. “He’s a very calming influence and makes sure the players have everything they need, which is what I’ve heard coming out of the Thunder and also my experience with him in the Pune Warriors in the IPL. He’s someone that has a lot of experience in world cricket, especially in the T20 format. He brings a lot to the team and I’m really excited about joining up with him,” he added.

Michael Hussey, the director of cricket at Sydney Thunder welcomed Ferguson to the setup. “Callum is one of the most talented batsmen in Australia. He’s been one of our main targets throughout the off-season and we know that there was a lot of competition for his signature. Callum brings a lot of experience and has played at the very highest level, we’re all very excited to welcome him to the club,” he said.
