The upcoming young Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer believes that leading the team in the ongoing Deodhar Trophy is making him more matured in taking decisions. He is currently playing in the final of the tournament leading India B against Karnataka. He has also scored a decent amount of runs in the series so far and is also looking good in the title clash. However, Iyer thinks that his game has also improved while leading India B in the tournament.

Iyer also played quite a few matches during India’s recent tour to South Africa where they won both the ODI and T20I series. Indian skipper Virat Kohli gave him frequent chances during the ODI series but the youngster couldn’t latch on to the opportunities presented to him. Even on the field, he looked lost as he dropped a few catches which also went on to cost the team in one of the games. Perhaps nervousness could be the reason for the same but the cricketer has to make most of the chances he gets.

I always want to win

Shreyas Iyer, while speaking to Ahmedabad Mirror, stressed that captaincy never comes to his mind while batting which helps him a lot. “It gets the best out of me. Because I always want to win. Even while batting, it never gets to my mind that I’m the captain, so I’ve to change my game. It has made me more mature in taking decisions and going for my shots. Earlier, I used to play pre-determined strokes, but now I’ve controlled that habit. I’m aware of the situation and the conditions,” he said.

Iyer believed that he deserved more chances in the Indian team but also understands that he needs to be consistent always. “I should get a long run. I have done that much performance so obviously, I deserve it. I need to maintain my consistency to be in the Indian team. And also I have not got that many chances to play in the Indian team. I hardly got two chances (in South Africa), and that too, after 40 overs (he came in during the 36th and 32nd overs),” he added.
