The 23rd match of the CPL 2020 turned out to be another top-notch outing and a dominant display of cricket by the Trinbago Knight Riders, this time against the team exploring the depths of what seems to be a bottomless pit: St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Winning the toss, the Patriots’ skipper Rayad Emrit chose to follow the field-first template, backing his batting unit to chase the target. Little did Emrit and his men know that Lendl Simmons had some rebellious plans!

Simmons’ show

The Caribbean fella missed out a deserving century as he holed one into Sheldon Cottrell’s hand at deep square leg at 96. But before that delivery, it was all Simmons written over the Brian Lara Stadium. He slapped 7 fours and 6 dashing maximums en route to his blistering knock off only 63 deliveries and showed why he remains such a deadly force in the format.

On the back of his 96 and run-a-ball 36 by Darren Bravo, the Riders posted a 174 for 4 in their 20 overs. Coming out to chase what was quite a high score by this year’s CPL standards, the Patriots were trapped by the Riders’ spinners. Left-arm spinners Khary Pierre and Akeal Hosein dried up the runs in Powerplay.

Chris Lynn and Joshua da Silva looked steady for a while, however, Pravin Tambe and DJ bravo undid them in successive overs that happened to be the 12th and 13th. Right-arm spinner Sikandar Raza ran through the lower-order by his 3 wickets as the Patriots could only reach 115 for 7 thereby handing the table-toppers a massive victory by 59 runs.

Hetmyer’s ace

Later in the day, unlike the previous match, a low-scoring encounter unfolded between the St Lucia Zouks and the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the 24th game of the season. The game was won by the third-placed Warriors with such ridiculous ease that one wondered if Zouks really are above them in any standard, let alone the points tally.

Chasing has been the norm this year and that is precisely why the Warriors’ Chris Green invited the Zouks to bat after winning the toss. The spinners had started build a web around them right from the start as they were reduced to 26 for 3 after the Powerplay. The bowlers suffocated the scoring to such extent that forced the batsmen to open arms and that led to only a dismal tumble.

After the initial shocks, they never recovered and instead further deteriorated to 59/6 before some contributions from Najibullah Zadran (19), Mohammad Nabi (13), and little cameos from Javelle Glen (23) and Scott Kuggeleijn (13) took them to 109 for 7. Coming to chase, a man who was unable to flow since long- Chandrapaul Hemraj- played a decent hand of 26 from 25 before Shimron Hetmyer’s belligerent 36-ball 56 led his team to win in merely 13.5 overs.
