Indian captain Virat Kohli is going through an unbelievable purple patch at the moment. Kohli already has 35 ODI centuries to his name and the way right-hander is going about his business, It seems that he will end up breaking all the records in the future. The Indian skipper notched up more than 500 runs in the 6-match ODI series with the help of 3 tons to his name. He became first ever batsman to score more than 500 runs in bilateral series of 5 or 7 games as he scored 558 runs in the series.
In the longer format of the game, Kohli was the only centurion in the 3-match series which India lost 2-1 but Kohli remained the top scorer in the series with 286 runs. After a 26-run innings in the first T20, Kohli, if he manages to score 130 or more runs, he will become only the 2nd player after West Indies legend Sir Vivian Richards to have scored 1000 plus runs in a bilateral series. Vivian Richards had scored 1045 runs during West Indies tour of England in 1976. Richards had piled up 829 runs in 5 Tests while he made 216 runs in 3-ODI series.
130 runs to get in two T20Is
With just 2 T20 internationals left in the series, one would think outperforming Richards in terms of runs will be a very difficult task for Kohli as he will have to score 176 runs or more in order to break the record of the West Indian legends record of 1045 runs. But the kind of form Indian skipper is going, one can expect him to go past the 4 figure mark If he plays the remaining two games.
The Indian skipper is currently ranked number 3 in the T20 international ranking. He averages just over 52 in the T20 internationals but doesn’t have a century in the shortest format of the game. It will be interesting to see If the 29-year-old can register his first ever T20 ton and manage to go past 1000-run mark or he goes one-mile extra by breaking Sir Vivian Richard’s record.
