Former West Indies great Courtney Walsh is all set to join the Bangladesh Cricket team as a specialist bowling coach. He agreed to a 3-year contract, which lasts till the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Walsh’s contract with the West Indies Cricket team, ended a couple of weeks ago, after the India’s tour of West Indies. “Having watched Bangladesh cricket from afar over the years, they are a seriously talented bunch of players,” Walsh said on Wednesday (August 31).

He also praised the Bangladesh cricket team’s head coach, saying that he had done a great job thus far and he will be looking forward to complementing his skills. “Chandika Hathurusingha has done a wonderful job thus far as Head Coach so hopefully I can complement his skills and continue the positive progress,” said the former West Indies skipper.

Ever since his retirement from international cricket in 2001, Walsh has been involved in various administration roles in the likes of being the mentor for Jamaica Tallawahs in Caribbean Premier League, WICB selector, and the manager of the national Under-19 side.

“Obviously, the West Indies is my home but the chance to go in a new direction in coaching at the international level with a talented group was one I couldn’t let that opportunity pass,” said the 53-year-old, who bagged 519 Test wickets and 227 wickets in ODIs in a career spanning around 17 years.

Walsh, who was also named as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the year in 1987, will join the team ahead of the upcoming England tour in October despite fears it may be called off after the Dhaka attack. However, England has agreed to go ahead with the tour.
