Nikita Miller has played 81 T20s thus far, but despite his experience, he didn’t feature for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the first nine matches of this year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) owing to the presence of an abundance of spinners in the TKR setup. Yesterday, the left-arm spinner got his first opportunity and it didn’t turn out to be a pleasant one by any means.

After some lusty blows down the batting order from Kevon Cooper lifted the Knights to 154 for the loss of seven wickets, the Warriors made an impressive start as they raced away to 61 for two wickets in the eighth over. Miller was introduced in the ninth over and he conceded four runs, but the next over turned out to be equivalent to a nightmare for the 36-year-old spinner.

Rutherford lays into Miller

He started the over in an impressive manner with the wicket of Jason Mohammed in his very first delivery. Never did he know that a 20-year-old by the name of Sherfane Rutherford was waiting to pick the bones out of him. The bowler dished out a good-length delivery and the left-handed batsman knelt down and smacked him for a monstrous blow in his very first ball.

In the next delivery, Miller churned out a similar delivery and it was dealt with even more ferocity by Rutherford as he played a similar stroke over mid-wicket. Thereafter, the bowler came over the wicket and pushed the ball outside the off-stump, but to his dismay, Rutherford was up to the task. He knelt down and audaciously reverse-swept the ball over third man for another six.

When the batter came in, the Warriors required 69 runs from 59 balls and the onslaught brought down the required rate to under six runs per over. Rutherford eventually went on to score 45 runs from 13 balls with one boundary and six sixes to help his team cement their spot in the top two of the points table. The Warriors will next play the same opponent in the first qualifier on September 11.
