CPL 2019: Chris Jordan takes a one-handed stunner to dismiss Jonathan Carter

CPL 2019 is done and dusted. After weeks of swashbuckling cricket, some damp squibs, humdingers and some of the best individual performances you’ll ever see, we finally got the champion of the season. In the end, it was the Jason Holder-led Barbados Tridents who managed to upstage the winning juggernaut that was the Guyana Amazon Warriors. Coming into this game on the back of an unprecedented 11-match winning streak, the Shoaib Malik-led Guyana Amazon Warriors faltered at the last hurdle where it mattered the most.

Batting first, Barbados Tridents got off to a really good start. The likes of Johnson Charles and English International Alex Hales combined to provide their team a swashbuckling start to their innings in the all-important grand-finale. Both Johnson Charles and Alex Hales made good use of the fielding restrictions of the first six overs.

While Charles scored a brisk 22-ball 39, an innings which included six fours and one six, Hales scored a 24-ball 28. However, both the openers fell in quick succession, paving way for a middle-order collapse with the likes of Philip Salt (0), Shai Hope (8), skipper Jason Holder (1) and gun all-rounder from Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan falling for just 15, to leave their side reeling at 5-90 in 12,2 overs. Enter Jonathan Carter. The West Indian tearaway left-hander needed to put on a substantial show to allow his team to post a fighting total.

And, he did just that. The left-hander smoked the Guyana Amazon Warriors bowlers to all corners of the ground, inflicting a stunning assault that saw him smash 4 fours and as many sixes during his 27-ball 50. Carter’s innings eventually paved way for his team lifting the Caribbean Premier League title and for him personally it would have been a great moment or you might say a sweet redemption, considering the fact that he was dismissed courtesy some athletic brilliance from Chris Jordon in the Qualifier 02 against the Trinbago Knight Riders.

It all happened during the 15th over of the Tridents’ innings during the second qualifier against the Trinbago Knight Riders when Jordan outfoxed Carter with a slower delivery, one that took the leading edge off the latter’s bat. Jordan was, however, sharp enough to realize the leading-edge and showed outstanding athletic skills to grab a one-handed stunner; one that prompted a visibly excited Danny Morrison to say, “Move over Marvin Gaye on the dancefloor… holy shmoly!”
