Nothing has gone wrong for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in this CPL. It’s not that they haven’t been put under pressure, but someone or the other have always put their hands up in crisis. In their last league match against Trinbago Knight Riders at the Providence Stadium, Nicholas Pooran was the one, scoring 54. It means that the Shoaib Malik-captained unit go into the playoffs, unbeaten.

Though they are yet to win the championship once, they have made the finals four out of six times. To add to their delight, the Warriors will be playing the Qualifier 1 against the Barbados Tridents at home itself, where they previously beat the same opponent by 47 runs. For Jason Holder’s men, they have strained, but are in good rhythm, having won their last two games, managing the second spot.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch in Guyana has provided significant assistance to the spinners. And it tends to get slower with every passing over. Both teams have defended totals efficiently and would want to bat first after winning the toss. Since it’s a day-game, the strip may help the spinners even more. The pacers will have to work hard. There will be chances of rain in the morning with the temperature in the 30s.

Team Combinations

Guyana Amazon Warriors

The Warriors have been a tough nut to crack. Leave alone Imran Tahir and Chris Green, two of their leading wicket-takers this season with 13 scalps each. Even their part-time spinners in Shoaib Malik and Chandrapaul Hemraj have economy rates of under six, showing the team’s incredible bowling strength. Keemo Paul and Ben Laughlin haven’t gotten much chances to bowl in the last two games.

Romario Shepherd is likely to make a comeback in place of Odean Smith. In the batting department, all of their specialists have played a part. King and Hemraj have set the platform. Pooran will be high on confidence after his fifty versus TKR. Malik has an average of 93.66 in the middle-order with 281 runs. Shimron Hetmyer is a tad out of runs, but has the potential to get his rhythm back any time.

Probable XI

Brandon King, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer, Shoaib Malik (C), Nicholas Pooran (wk), Sherfane Rutherford, Chris Green, Keemo Paul, Ben Laughlin, Imran Tahir, Odean Smith/Romario Shepherd

Barbados Tridents

The Tridents have depended heavily on their bowling, which will be put to test in front of an in-form Warriors’ batting. Harry Gurney and Shakib Al Hasan, the latest additions to the squad, have economy rates of below five. The latter has also looked good with the bat, showing intent. Hayden Walsh has 17 wickets with a bowling average of 8.3 and the leg-spinner has to be on top of his game.

Moreover, Jason Holder and Raymon Reifer have kept a check on the runs with 12 and eight wickets respectively. Reifer has done good with the bat as well, especially in the death overs. In the batting area, Johnson Charles and JP Duminy can’t afford to be complacent as they are the Tridents’ leading run-getter this season by a long way. Alex Hales has looked out of sorts and he is due for a big score.

Probable XI

Johnson Charles (wk), Alex Hales, Shakib Al Hasan, JP Duminy, Ashley Nurse, Justin Greaves, Raymon Reifer, Jonathan Carter, Jason Holder (C), Hayden Walsh, Harry Gurney
