The game of cricket is one that never fails to surprise us; a game full of splendours and hidden intricacies. A strange incident happened in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020 during the match between Guyana Amazon Warriors and Jamaica Tallawahs at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad on August 22 (Saturday).
For the preparation and maintenance of the playing area, rollers are operated on the pitch to flatten it out before the match commences. A heavy roller is used on the 22 yard pitch as it compresses the soil making the surface rock hard. Also, it is an attempt to make the pitch consistent without any significant cracks or holes.
This is what happened just before the match between Guyana Amazon Warriors and Jamaica Tallawahs. However, the strange thing here was that the roller was unintentionally used on the playing area when a cricket ball was placed there. It resulted in the ball accidentally rolling into the surface creating a big hole on the 22 yards.
Thus, the match was delayed by 15 minutes as the ground staff needed some time to repair the hole and make the pitch ready for play. The match, which was slated to kick-start at 11:45 pm IST, commenced at 12 am IST due to the delay.
An insight into the CPL match between GAW and JT
Both Amazon Warriors and Tallawahs were on the same page before the starting of the match as they had won a game each from their two outings. However, GAW managed to defend a paltry total of 118 against Rovman Powell and Co, climbing up to the first position on the table owing to their net run rate.
Jamaica had won the toss and elected to bat first. Owing to the brilliant bowling from Mujeeb ur Rahman and Carlos Braithwaite with the figures of 3/18 and 3/14 respectively, Tallawahs managed to bundle their opposition to a mere score of 118 runs.
However, JT couldn’t capitalise on the opportunity as they were reduced to 4/3 in just 4 overs. Further, their batting line-up crumbled at 104/7 in a 20-over match. Despite Andre Russell scoring 52 not-out for his team, Tallawahs lost the match to Amazon Warriors by 14 runs.
