The Caribbean extravaganza has entered into the third leg as it travels back to Tarouba from Port of Spain. The 21st match of CPL 2020 is scheduled between the Jamaica Tallawahs and Trinbago Knight Riders on 1st September at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad.

The Riders’ brilliance is hard to be described in any set of words and they are atop the points table with a whopping six victories from as many league encounters. In their last game against the Barbados Tridents, it was for the first time that they looked like not being at their dominant best. Although it did not take the Caribbean monster Kieron Pollard to change the course of the game through his bombarding knock of 72 off merely 28!

The bowlers bowled decently as they restricted the Tridents to 148 at the loss of 7 wickets as Jayden Seales, Sikandar Raza, and Akeal Hossain bagged a couple each with the ball. Pollards’ men were in rags at a stage with their top 5 back in the hut with 62 on the board. Just when the Tridents would have fancied their chance to break the Riders’, Pollard appeared with all his might to decimate his adversaries and take his team through to the next stage.

On the other hand, Jamaica Tallawahs have had a roller-coaster ride thus far. With 3 wins and as many losses in 6 matches, they are situated at the fourth spot in the points tally with 6 points. They are coming in this match after handing routing the wretched St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. The Tallawahs posted a decent target of 148 for the Patriots on the back of Glenn Phillips’ unbeaten 61-ball 79 knock.

Their bowling unit had an absolute bash as Carlos Brathwaite bagged three whereas Fidel Edwards, Veerasammy Permaul, and Sandeep Lamichchane got 2 each in the process of crushing their opponents’ batting order and dismissing them for a poor 110. However, Rovman Powell and his charges must know that they are going to face the strongest team straight after having faced the weakest this year, and the challenge to stop the Riders has been taken unsuccessfully by many.

Pitch and conditions

The spinners have ruled the charts this year, however, with the tournament moving to the old venue means a fresh pitch will be used for today’s game. Therefore, the pacers might get a bit of purchase from the wicket. Teams have shown a clear inclination towards chasing than defending and that seems to remain the same this time as well. There are thunderstorms expected, although not any enough to curtail the match.

Playing combinations

Jamaica Tallawahs

The Tallawahs have been over-reliant on Glenn Phillips at the top and he has not disappointed. Opener Chadwick Walton’s duties were changed in the last game as he was sent lower down the order, but he did not fail to fail. Nkumrah Bonner, who was sent in alongside Phillips did not impress too much and he might pave way for Andre Russell in this game.

Jermaine Blackwood looked good for his 27 and should come in at his regular No. 3 position. Asif Ali, Andre Rusell, and Carlos Brathwaite should form the middle-order for the Tallawahs. Brathwaite, who has not been able to impress with the bat, has been constantly in the wickets and he bowled with great control in the last game too.

The spin duo of Sandeep Lamichchane and Mujeeb ur Rahman continued to click like they have the entire season as they bagged 3 wickets for 39 runs in their 8 overs combined. Veerasammy Permaul had a rememberable outing as well as he got a couple of wickets with a decent economy.

Predicted XI- Glenn Phillips (WK), Chadwick Walton, Jermaine Blackwood, Rovman Powell (C), Asif Ali, Andre Russell/Nkrumah Bonner, Carlos Brathwaite, Veerasammy Permaul, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Sandeep Lamichhane, Fidel Edwards

Bench- Andre Russell/Nkrumah Bonner, Ramaal Lewis, Preston McSween, Oshane Thomas, Nicholas Kirton, Ryan Persaud

Trinbago Knight Riders

The Riders have been on cruise mode ever since the inception of this year’s league, however, they looked in trouble in the last game with neither amongst Tion Webster, Colin Munro, Darren Bravo, and Tim Siefert chipping in.

Evin Lewis getting some runs, however, must have been a happy affair for the team as he has not been able to fire. Kieron Pollard did not contribute much before the last match but he ensured that he made it big when he contributed.

It remains to be seen whether Sunil Nairne, who has been out of action since the last few matches, and Dwayne Bravo, who missed the last game, are fit or now. After impressive spells in the last game Khary Pierre, Jayden Seales, and Akeal Hossain are expected to play.

Predicted XI- Lendl Simmons, Tion Webster, Colin Munro, Darren Bravo, Tim Seifert (WK), Kieron Pollard (C), Dwayne Bravo/Sikandar Raza, Khary Pierre, Fawad Ahmed/Sunil Narine, Jayden Seales, Akeal Hosein

Bench: Fawad Ahmed/Sunil Narine, Pravin Tambe, Anderson Phillip, Amir Jangoo, Ali Khan, Dwayne Bravo/Sikandar Raza.
