Australia started their ICC ODI World Cup 2023 tournament journey with a bad loss to India on October 8, 2023. This match was the 5th match of the tournament and was played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Australia batted first after winning the toss. Only David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (46) could handle the Indian spinners as the team got folded for only 199. Mitchell Starc also contributed 28 runs to the cause. Ravindra Jadeja (3/28) was the major wicket-taker for India.

In response, Australia's Josh Hazlewood took three wickets while dismissing Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer for ducks. India was 2/3 when Virat Kohli and KL Rahul came together and added 165 runs for the fourth wicket. Kohli made 85 and Rahul made 97* as India won by six wickets with 52 balls to spare. This was not the start Australia was looking at to begin their tournament and will now think about tweaking something here and there when they face South Africa.

Here are the three changes Australia should make to start winning in ODI World Cup 2023:

1. Marcus Stoinis in place of Cameron Green

Cameron Green is a fine all-rounder who has done well in parts for Australia. But in the ODI format, he is still trying to find his feet. In the last six ODIs, he has no score of fifty and has only five wickets. Overall, he has 387 runs in 21 ODIs and 16 wickets. He struggled against quality spin, especially in the match against India.

While Marcus Stoinis was not fit for this encounter, Australia will bring him in to replace Green, as he has more experience. Stoinis is also a better hitter against spin, given that he has 1400 runs in 64 ODIs at the strike rate of 94.02. He can also hit the pacers for big shots and is a better bowler than Green.
