The second week of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) was difficult for bowlers as they suffered a severe pounding. During the Delhi Capitals (DC) versus Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) contest in Visakhapatnam, the latter broke into record books after accumulating 272 runs in 20 overs and recording the second-highest team total in the league.

Following the incredible action in the first week of the tournament, batters were expected to be dominating in the second week due to flat pitches. However, some bowling units defied all odds and performed exceptionally and helped their teams taste success. To discuss more, let’s rate bowling displays of all sides in the second week.

Here are the ratings of all teams’ bowling performances in the second week -

10. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) - 4/10

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) bowling attack looked ordinary against KKR. Defending a score of 182 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, their mainstay bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Alzarri Joseph got hammered mercilessly. The miserable bowling led the Challengers to a humiliating seven-wicket loss.

After the hammering from Kolkata, captain Faf du Plessis dropped Joseph and inducted Reece Topley in the playing XI against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). However, the Englishman failed to deliver effective results, giving away 39 runs in his four overs and getting only one wicket. Along with Topley, Siraj also went expensive in the contest.

9. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)- 4/10

After two comfortable triumphs in the first week, CSK lost to Delhi Capitals (DC) in Visakhapatnam. Taking advantage of the Yellow Army’s ineffective bowling, DC posted 191 runs on the board. Among CSK’s key bowlers, Tushar Deshpande did his job efficiently while Ravindra Jadeja, Mustafizur Rahman, and Deepak Chahar went expensive.

Mumbai Indians (MI) haven’t been upto the mark in the competition, thus far. In the second week, Rajasthan Royals (RR) annihilated them at the Wankhede Stadium and handed them their third defeat of the tournament. Saving a low total of 125, Mumbai removed Yashasvi Jaiswal early but couldn’t tie the hands of Riyan Parag, who showcased courage and guided the visitors to a six-wicket triumph, with his unbeaten 54 off 39.

7. Delhi Capitals (DC)- 6/10

Delhi Capitals (DC) earned an embarrassing record against KKR in Visakhapatnam. Bowling first after losing the toss, the Capitals splurged 272 runs, making Kolkata become the team with the second-highest team total in the cash-rich league. Their premier speedsters Anrich Nortje, Ishant Sharma, and Khaleel Ahmed were plundered mercilessly.

6. Punjab Kings (PBKS)- 6/10

Punjab Kings (PBKS) won their last game against Gujarat Titans (GT), riding on Shashank Singh’s blistering knock but their bowling has become a cause of concern. In the last two games, their star bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh have looked inconsistent while Harshal Patel has emerged as a failure.

5. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)- 6.5/10

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) lost their only game in the week against GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Against the 2022 champions, the Sunrisers were defending 163 following their batters’ average show in the first innings. Except for veteran Pat Cummins, all bowlers struggled to cause trouble to GT. Mayank Markande and Shahbaz Ahmed got one wicket apiece but that didn’t harm the hosts.

4. Gujarat Titans (GT)- 7/10

Gujarat’s campaign is going through ups and downs under Shubman Gill’s captaincy. Against SRH, GT’s bowlers put up an amazing show and contained the opponents on only 162. Mohit Sharma grabbed a three-wicket haul and became the Player of the Match. The paceman received support from Azmatullah Omarzai, Noor Ahmad, and Rashid Khan, who bowled wicket-taking and economical spells.

However, GT’s bowling looked completely different against Punjab at the same venue. This time, they were saving 200 and all other key bowlers were taken to the cleaners except for Noor, who got the prized scalps of Jonny Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)- 8/10

KKR outplayed RCB and DC in the second week and gained four crucial points. On the batting-friendly track of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, KKR bowlers displayed valour and restricted RCB to an average score of 182. Similarly against DC in Visakhapatnam, they got a humongous total of 273 runs to save, and taking advantage of DC’s shattered confidence, they bundled out the hosts on 166.

2. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)- 9/10

LSG played exceptionally in the second week of the tournament. They thrashed PBKS and RCB and announced their domination after losing their opening game against RR. The 21-year-old pacer Mayank Yadav looked marvellous with the ball and guided the team to back-to-back wins. Against PBKS, when LSG were on the backfoot after failing to get wickets in the first 11 overs, the youngster held his nerves and dismissed the dangerous Jonny Bairstow.

After delivering the first breakthrough, he removed Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma, who are known for their power-hitting potential. In Lucknow’s 21-run triumph, he became the recipient of the Player of the Match award for his amazing spell (3/27 in four overs). In the next game against RCB, he looked more ferocious and helped the side defend 181 on Bengaluru’s batting heaven. In his four overs, he splurged only 14 runs and picked up Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, and Rajat Patidar.

1. Rajasthan Royals (RR)- 9.5/10

Rajasthan wrecked MI at the Wankhede Stadium and won their third consecutive contest in the competition. Trent Boult spearheaded RR’s bowling attack and racked up three wickets. His hunts were Rohit Sharma, Naman Dhir, and Dewald Brevis in the first powerplay. The New Zealander received assistance from Nandre Burger and Avesh Khan, who uprooted MI’s batting unit. Yuzvendra Chahal also chipped in with three wickets in his four overs, leaking only 11 runs.
