IPL 2014 once again had eight teams competing for the title after Pune Warriors India pulled out. The first few games were held in the UAE before the tournament returned to India. CSK, PBKS, RR, and RCB were the four teams in the top four after the first 28 matches. From this, only CSK and PBKS qualified. RCB eventually finished seventh.

RR famously crashed out after losing to MI, where the latter had to chase 190 in 14.3 overs to get their NRR above the former. MI, who were seventh at the halfway stage, progressed to the playoffs after Aditya Tare hit a last-ball six to take Mumbai home against the Royals. However, it was KKR who prevailed in the final, beating PBKS by three wickets, chasing down a 200-run target with three balls to spare. KKR also qualified after being fifth at the halfway stage, famously embarking on a nine-match winning streak, which ended in them winning the tournament after winning just two out of the first seven matches.
