Thank you for joining us!

Thank you for joining us in what was a terrific day in Chinnaswamy. Sri Lanka registered a massive win, which have tattered England's hope to win ODI World Cup 2023. That's all we have tonight. See you all tomorrow!

Winning skipper Kusal Mendis said:

"NRR going up is good for the team. We bowled very well today. Everyone did really well today. Another 4 games left. If we win 3 games back to back, we'll be in the semis. Players did well last match also. Hope we can do well next couple of matches. Kumara did well today. He's the main fast bowler in Sri Lanka. Bowled 140-145 speeds. Very happy that he came back strong today. Mathews bowled really well. He offers so many things. Can bat also. Can play the pressure situation also. I'm very lucky to be playing with him. Fielding was excellent today. Want to keep doing the same in the next 4 matches," Mendis said.

Losing skipper Jos Buttler said:

"It's incredibly tough. As a captain you feel that a lot - disappointed with myself and the boys that we've not shown our best. We're playing a long way short of our best. There's a lot of really experienced cricketers in the room. You don't become a bad team overnight. That's the frustration. We've been so far short of our best, and there's no particular reason. Can't put my finger on it. Selection is something you want to be consistent with. Selection hasn't been our problem. We've been short of our standards. Lots of the dismissals - Root's run out - you don't see that kind of mistakes from us. Haven't been building partnerships. Not doing the basic things well with both bat and ball. The biggest thing is personal pride. The standards we set for ourselves. Rest of the matches we want to get back to playing good cricket. Whatever will be will be," Buttler said.

POINTS TABLE!

POTM Lahiru Kumara said:

"Playing a team like England, I’m very happy to perform this way today. Didn't make a lot of changes after the previous match, the Australia game was an off day for me. I’ve worked hard on my bowling. (On Mathews) Having him back is an inspiration, he gave me a lot of support and was talking to me throughout. (On his role in the team) The plan was to attack the middle overs with disciplined bowling, and we were rewarded with wickets," Kumara said.

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru will host the England versus Sri Lanka (SL) clash in the ongoing ODI World Cup on Thursday, October 26. There were genuine concerns surrounding the Sri Lankan team in the marquee event. Prior to the tournament, the likes of Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera missed out on the trip to India due to injuries. To make matters worse, regular captain Dasun Shanaka and the talented Matheesha Pathirana were ruled out with injuries after featuring in the first two games.

The former World Champions lost three matches in a row to start their campaign. After the disastrous beginning, Sri Lanka picked up their first win in the 10-team tournament when they beat the Netherlands in their most recent game. Kusal Mendis' team is now placed at No. 8 on the points table with two points from four matches.

Meanwhile, defending champions England were expected to have a deep run in the tournament. However, they are languishing at No. 9 on the points table with two points from four matches. Their only win came against Bangladesh.

All is not lost as yet for England and Sri Lanka. They can still push for a place in the semifinals but there is very little room for errors. Both teams have brought in some injury replacements. Veteran Angelo Mathews has replaced the injured Pathirana, while the talented Brydon Carse came in for Reece Topley. Both the new additions could get starts in the upcoming game.

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium has traditionally been a batter's paradise. Australia faced Pakistan last week at this venue and 672 runs were scored in 95.3 overs. The batting-friendly conditions would suit England more as Sri Lanka could struggle with their inexperienced bowling line-up. A lot would depend on how Sri Lanka restricts the fearless yet vulnerable English batting order. Left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka, who has picked up 11 wickets in four games so far, will hold the key with the new ball. On the batting front, Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama have been in form and that should give their team some confidence.

England will hope for a better display with the bat and if the likes of Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes come to the party, they are going to look like an entirely different team.
