Who Said What
Ibrahim Zadran, Player of the Match: I wanted to go out there with a positive mind and positive intent, and I did it. We (Gurbaz and himself) have played a lot of cricket with each other, we have good communication while running between the wickets as we have been playing together since under-16 days. The way Gurbaz supported me (in that opening partnershijp) - that helped me and we got the momentum in our favour. I am feeling great for myself and my country.
Babar Azam (Losing skipper): This hurts us. We had a good total. In the bowling, we weren't up to the mark as we are not taking wickets in the middle overs. If you are not good in even one department, then you'll lose the game. We didn't stop boundaries and gave away runs, that cost us. Bowling - we started well, in the middle overs, we needed wickets but we couldn't take any. All credit to Afghanistan the way they played in all three departments. That's why they won. We are not playing good cricket in bowling and fielding. We'll try our best in the next match. We didn't hit the lengths in the middle overs, especially our spinners. We couldn't put pressure on the batters.

The iconic lap of honour
Afghanistan perform the lap of honour. Ironically, it is the same moment that was performed by Pakistan after their infamous victory against India at this venue more than two decades ago. Several years later, the tables have turned.
Match Summary
Pakistan - 282/7 (50 overs)
Babar Azam - 74 (92); Noor Ahmad 3/49 (10 overs)
Afghanistan - 286/2 (49 overs)
Ibrahimullah Zadran 87 (113); Hasan Ali 1/44 (10 overs)
The experienced guy has his say
Mohammad Nabi also speaks to the broadcasters: "Big moment for the whole of Afghanistan. We have played eight games against Pakistan, and won in a big event. It's a lovely moment today. We beat England as well, and now Pakistan. The team is confident now. [Earlier] in the last moments, we used to lose the game [to Pakistan]. We thought it was the same wicket like against New Zealand, but it was totally changed. Noor bowled brilliantly, in the good areas. A lot of close games, and this is a fantastic feeling. We shouldn't have lost against Bangladesh. But now half the tournament is gone. We gave a lap of honour at the ground, and hopefully in Pune also they will support us."
Zadran speaks
Ibrahim Zadran is the Player of the Match: "Thankful that I performed well in this event. I wanted to play with a positive intent. Many times Gurbaz and I have done a brilliant partnership together. We have played a lot of cricket together, right from the Under-16 days. I am feeling very glad for myself and for my country."
Ibrahimullah Zadran is the man of the night
Ibrahimullah Zadran, who went absolute bonkers on the star-studded Pakistani line-up, has been adjudged as the Player of the Match. He played a brilliant knock of 87 runs in 113 balls to put the Afghans in a comfortable position.
Afghan Jalebi
If Pakistan were Giants, Afghans turned out to be the Giant Killers as they pulled out a win at a crucial stage and bagged two crucial points.
For Pakistan, on the other hand, this game will go right in the list of the upsets that they have faced in the history of the ODI World Cups.

Clinical win
Handshakes all around as Afghanistan win by eight wickets.
That will be curtains
Captain Hashmatuallah Shahidi hits the winning runs, as Afghanistan win their first-ever ODI against Pakistan.
Wow, this has been really, really special for them. Their top-order just outplayed Pakistan from the get go, and the joy in the Afghan camp says it all.
Scores Level
Afghans are on the cusp of one of the biggest upsets ever.
End of the over
Afghanistan need just four runs to win from 12 balls. Win seems to be just a formality now, but its not over till its over.
The action will continue in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as Pakistan and Afghanistan take on each other in Match 22 on Monday, October 23 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Pakistan are coming into the game having lost back-to-back fixtures against India and Australia. They started their tournament well with wins over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka but lost their way after the first two matches.
The Babar Azam-led side are ranked on the fifth spot on the points table with four points from four matches. On the other hand, Afghanistan are coming into the game having lost their previous fixture against New Zealand by 149 runs. They began their tournament with back-to-back losses against Bangladesh and India. However, the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side gave a surprising defeat to the defending champions by 69 runs in their third game.

Afghanistan find themselves on the last spot (tenth) on the points table with one win from three matches having two points to their name. The upcoming fixture promises to be an enthralling contest as the two sides will look to get back to winning ways after losing their last fixtures.
Notably, the two teams had a close affair, the last time they met in the ODI World Cup in 2019. Afghanistan made tough work of Pakistanβs chase of 228 as they could only win the game in the last over by three wickets with two balls to spare.
Afghanistan Spinners to enjoy their outing in Chennai
Meanwhile, the surface in Chennai has been favourable for spinners historically. In the last five matches played at the venue, three have been won by teams batting second. The average first innings score in the same time period has been 257 while the highest target chased is 288. Captain winning the toss is likely to bowl first as two out of the three matches played at the venue in the tournament so far have been won by teams batting second.
Afghanistanβs spin-trio of Rashid Khan, Mujeeb ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi will enjoy their outing in the middle and will look to pile on the pressure on Pakistan.
