Former South African captain Hashim Amla picked his greatest all-time ODI XI during a recent interview. He picked three Indians, three South Africans, two Aussies in his line-up. The remaining three players were from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the West Indies. No one from England and New Zealand made it to his squad.

Amla named Sachin Tendulkar and Adam Gilchrist as his openers during Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube podcast. Tendulkar is the highest run-getter in international cricket. Virat Kohli, who has most centuries in ODI cricket, was named as the No. 3 batter in his side. In the middle order, Amla picked Brian Lara, AB de Villiers, and Jacques Kallis. They have aggregated 10,405, 9,577, and 11,579 runs in the format, respectively. Kallis also bagged 273 wickets with his medium-pace bowling.

Former India captain and iconic wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni was also named in the playing XI. He has the second-most runs as a wicketkeeper-batter in the format after Kumar Sangakkara.

In the bowling department, Amla went with a combination of two spinners and as many seamers. Muttiah Muralitharan, the highest wicket-taker in international cricket, was named alongside Shane Warne as the spinners in the side. On the seam-bowling front, Wasim Akram was paired with Dale Steyn. While the former has the most wickets in ODIs by a Pakistani bowler, the latter accounted for 194 wickets in his career.

Talking about Amla, he himself is a champion batter, aggregating 9282 runs in 124 Tests and 8113 runs in 181 ODIs. He was also a consistent performer in the T20I circuit, scoring 1277 runs in 44 matches. He also has two centuries and three fifties in 16 Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. Amla retired from international cricket in August 2019, following the ODI World Cup.
