The devastating Carribean athlete Andre Russell is known for his magnificent all-round skills in T20Is and franchise cricket. In 2012, he broke into the Indian Premier League (IPL) with his appearance for Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils). In the initial editions of the league, he failed to be impactful with both bat and ball which resulted in his disassociation with Capitals ahead of the 2014 season.

In 2014, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) believed in Russell and fetched him for INR 60 lakh. For the new franchise, the swashbuckling all-rounder got a chance to become a part of the playing XI in only two contests. In both games, he failed to turn up against opponents and ended up the season with just two runs and a wicket.

Witnessing his capability and talent in international cricket, KKR trusted him in 2015 as they wanted to defend the title. Grabbing the chance with both hands, he delivered some quality knocks and spells that won his team important matches. Playing 13 games for the franchise, he racked up 326 runs and bagged 14 wickets in the season. These stunning numbers also cemented his place in the squad.

Following his spirited performance, KKR played him in majority of matches during the ninth IPL season. This time, he looked better with the ball, scalping 15 wickets in 12 games, at an economy of 7.97. The fearless player also delivered some match-winning knocks with his bat.

After serving his team efficiently for a couple of seasons, Russell became an integral part of KKR. In 2017, he was barred from participating in that yea edition of the tournament due to his one-year ban for a doping-code violation. Before the IPL mega-auction in 2018, KKR again showed faith in spunky Russell and retained him along with his West Indies teammate Sunil Narine.

In the newly formed KKR squad in 2018, he was one of the senior players due to his four-year long association with the team. Reducing his captain Dinesh Karthik’s workload, the veteran came hard on bowlers, hitting 316 runs in 16 games at a massive strike rate of 184.79. With the ball, he picked up 13 wickets at an economy of 9.38.

The 2019 IPL edition witnessed his best with the bat as the KKR stalwart smashed 510 runs in 14 contests, at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 204.81. His iconic, unbeaten 48-run knock off 13 deliveries against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is still a pleasant memory for the KKR supporters.

In the same season, he cherished the local crowd at Eden Gardens by punishing the MI bowlers during his impeccable 80*-run innings off 40 deliveries.

Playing 14 matches in the season, the giant batter amassed 510 runs at a majestic strike rate of 204.81. These batting figures also made him the leading run-scorer for his team in the season. Along with his bat, he also served the team with the ball, hunting 11 batters at an economy of 9.51.

The dynamic Caribbean all-rounder looked completely out of colours in 2020 as he struggled to be amongst the runs and wickets. His underwhelming performance cost Knight Riders as they couldn’t qualify for the knockout stage again after 2019. Notching up 117 runs and six wickets in ten matches, he couldn’t bring joy to the faces of his franchise’s fans.

Following their disappointing display in 2019 and 2020, Knight Riders were relying on one of their oldest servants Russell to fare well in the competition's 2021 edition.

However, the veteran couldn't deliver an outstanding performance to live upto the expectations, piling up only 183 runs in ten matches with just one fifty. With the ball too, he ended up with decent numbers. Grabbing 11 wickets in 10 matches, at an economy of 9.89, he disappointed his team with the ball as well.

Despite his underwhelming performance in the 2020 and 2021 editions, Knight Riders didn’t lose their faith in Russell and retained him for the 2022 installment, along with Sunil Narine, Venkatesh Iyer, and Varun Chakravarthy.

This time, under the new skipper Shreyas Iyer, he exuded confidence with both bat and ball. Scoring 335 runs in 14 contests at an excellent strike rate of 174.47, he attracted the eyes of the franchise’s fans. The 34-year-old served the team brilliantly with his bowling as well. Snaring 17 scalps at an economy of 9.87, he emerged as the leading wicket-taker for his team.
