Andy Flower has ruled himself out of the running for the vacant England Men's Test Head Coach role, after Brendon McCullum was recently releived off his duties in the aftermath of the Three Lions' 2-1 series loss to New Zealand.
Flower, who currently coaches the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL and the London Spirit in the Hundred, insisted that he is satisfied coaching the two teams in the franchise circuit, and despite having taken up the role in the past, is more comfortable treading the current path.
"The bottom line for me is that I'm very happy in the work that I'm doing at the moment. I work for a couple of really good organisations. I've got really good teams around me and good people around me and I'm really comfortable with what I'm doing at the moment. I've worked with England before and I had an amazing time when I had the privilege to be England head coach and represent England as one of their leaders a number of years ago, and I remember those years really fondly, and it would be a privilege for me or anyone else to be the Test coach. But for me at this time, I'm really comfortable with what I'm doing. I'm going to stick with doing that," Flower said during a media interaction for London Spirit, as quoted by Cricinfo.
England and Wales Cricket Board CEO Richard Gould had stated that the board were open to letting the new Test coach split time with the IPL, which hinted at Flower being the main candidate. In response, Flower has admitted the possible difficulty in juggling both roles.
"Well, I can't speak for other people and it wouldn't be right for me to speak for the ECB, obviously. They'll have to make their own judgments on that. For me personally, I don't think I could have done both, especially with the IPL being held during the first couple of months of the English summer. If I was England Test coach, I'd like to be here watching and interacting with the people I needed to watch and interact with, so for me, that wasn't a possibility," Flower added.

Flower has previously been the coach of the England Men’s side from 2009 to 2014. Under the former Zimbabwe batter, the Three Lions endured one of their most successful periods in Test cricket, winning the Ashes home and away, while also securing a historic series win in India. He has also found success in the franchise circuit, taking RCB to their maiden title in 2025 and overseeing its successful defence in 2026.
