Pakistan and Sri Lanka are locking horns in the fifth Super 4 fixture of the Asia Cup 2023 on Thursday, September 14 at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. After opting to bat first, Pakistan got a major blow as opener Fakhar Zaman lost his stumps against Pramod Madushan in the fifth over of the innings with just nine runs on the board. Captain Babar Azam walked in at number three and looked in good nick as he played some gorgeous shots.

Babar and Abdullah Shafique had rescued Pakistan’s innings after the early blow by adding 64 runs off 70 balls for the second wicket. However, just when the star batter looked set for a big knock, he was left bamboozled by a sharp-turning delivery by Dunith Wellalage.
On the last ball of the 16th over, the left-arm spinner bowled a flighted delivery that turned away from the Pakistan captain and beat him as he tried to drive it. Behind the stumps, wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis quickly collected the ball and inflicted the stumping before Babar could plant his foot inside the crease. As a result, Babar’s innings ended on 29 (35) leaving Pakistan on 73/2.

Abdullah Shafique scores a sublime fifty
Ahead of the game, fans were eager to see the battle between the world’s number-one batter and Wellalage, who picked up a five-wicket haul against India in the previous game. During his innings, the Pakistan captain also became the highest run scorer of the tournament so far with 207 runs to his name from four innings at an average of 51.75.
Following Babar’s dismissal, Shafique carried the innings forward and scored a sublime half-century off 65 balls. However, he couldn’t continue his innings for long and got dismissed for 52 (69) trying to pull Matheesha Pathirana over square leg but got caught by Pramod Madushan. Pakistan further lost Mohammad Haris (3 off 9) who got dismissed caught and bowled by Pathirana in the 24th over leaving his side 108/4 after 24 overs.
