What once appeared as Bangladesh’s game to lose ended in a remarkable run chase for India to win the second Test and eventually clinch the series. Chasing a target of 145 runs, the KL Rahul-led side stumbled and lost seven wickets at the score of 74 but a gritty partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin kept India in the game as they eventually managed to win the Test in Mirpur.

On a pitch where the ball was turning square, both Ashwin and Shreyas played some phenomenal cricket to keep India in the hunt. Ashwin, who had played a lot of innings under the pump in Tests earlier accelerated at the right time to bring glory to India. The 36-year-old scored 42* runs off 62 deliveries while Iyer scored 29* off 46 balls.

After hitting the winning runs, Ashwin was understandably ecstatic and celebrated joyfully while former skipper Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid seemed to be delighted with the win too and it was evident from their reaction while sitting in the dressing room. Courtesy of his all-round performance, Ashwin was later adjudged the Player of the Match.

“We didn't have much batting left. It was one of those games where we let the game drift whenever we could have shut it off. Shreyas batted beautifully. Sometimes these situations you feel like you have to get ahead of things, they bowled good lines and I felt that we didn't trust our defences enough. Loved the way Shreyas batted. Pitches are quite good here. But I thought the ball got soft really quickly. Credit to Bangladesh, they put us under real pressure at certain moments,” said Ashwin in the post-match presentation as reported by Cricbuzz.

We've played enough cricket to realise that someone will put their hand up to win us the game: KL Rahul

India’s stand-in skipper KL Rahul was indeed delighted to see how the players stepped up to win them the match. Rahul, who’s currently going through a rough patch revealed that there was a lot of tension in the dressing room and mentioned why it was tough for the top-order batters in the second Test.

“You trust the guys in the middle (during such situations). We've played enough cricket to realise that someone will put their hand up to win us the game.

But I'm not going to lie, there was a lot of tension in the dressing room. It was a tough wicket to bat on, they put us under pressure in both innings. It was a new-ball surface to some extent, once ball got softer, it was easier to score runs.

It was a matter of who plays the new ball better. We did lose a few more wickets than ideal (in the chase) but we got the job done. Will take the win. That (bowling attack) has been the case for the last many years now. Wherever we've gone overseas in recent years, we have done the job,” Rahul said as reported by Cricbuzz.
