Virat Kohli announced his return to form in style in the Asia Cup 2022 as he brought up his maiden T20I century, against Afghanistan on September 8 at the Dubai International Stadium. It took more than 1000 days for Virat Kohli to get to the three-figure mark in international cricket after going through a slump in form.

Rohit Sharma was rested for the Afghanistan game with an eye on the T20 World Cup, and KL Rahul and Kohli opened the innings for India. After the fantastic century, there have been discussions regarding whether Kohli should open for India at the T20 World Cup. However, former Indian batter Virender Sehwag does not agree with those opinions.

It was just because the captain wasn't playing: Virender Sehwag

Sehwag recalled Dravid’s unbeaten 128 while opening with Sehwag in a 400-run partnership and felt that by such a logic, Dravid could have also been an opener. He stated that the only reason behind Kohli opening was Rohit's absecnce.

“No. By this logic, even Rahul Dravid could have been an opener. Sachin Tendulkar could have opened in Tests as well. They have also played big knocks in 1-2 innings as openers. I guess Dravid even scored some 160-170 runs and had remained unbeaten when we forged a 400-run partnership for the opening wicket in a Test. It was just because the captain wasn't playing, that's why Kohli opened,” Virender Sehwag told on Cricbuzz.

“Now that he has scored a century, I won't be surprised if this stops at 100 (international centuries). Then, we will see when he gets his 101st,” he added.
