Chris Silverwood steps down as Sri Lanka head coach

Chris Silverwood has stepped down as the head coach of the Sri Lankan national cricket team. The former England coach resigned after the team's disappointing performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India and 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA.

Silverwood's tenure with Sri Lanka began with well, as the team emerged victorious in 2022 T20 Asia Cup and also qualified for the finals of the 50-over Asia Cup in 2023.

Under his leadership, Sri Lanka also secured notable bilateral series wins, including a home series triumph against Australia in the ODI format and two away Test series victories over Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Silverwood cited personal reasons for his departure, citing the demanding nature of the job.

“Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones. After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home and spend some quality time together,” said Silverwood in a SLC statement.

“I would like to thank the players, coaches, backroom staff, and management of the SLC for their support during my time in Sri Lanka. Without your support, none of the success would have been possible. It has been a real honor for me to be part of Sri Lanka Cricket and I will be taking away many fond memories,” he added.

Mahela Jayawardene steps down from Sri Lanka's consultant coach role

Before Silverwood's resignation, former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene also stepped down from his role as consultant coach, a position he had held since 2022.

Early losses to South Africa and Bangladesh severely dented their chances, while their game against Nepal was washed out. The team's sole victory came gainst the Netherlands, which was not enough to ensure any further qualification.

As Sri Lanka look to rebuild following these setbacks, their focus will shift to the upcoming white-ball series against India in July and August. The series, consisting of three T20Is and three ODIs, will allow the team to regroup and put their recent disappointments behind them.
