Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are very tactical during the auctions. They take time to get going, but they manage to scout some really talented players. And that is exactly what they did this time as well, as they bagged the services of England all-rounder Ben Stokes for a whopping INR 16.25 crore. It was one of CSK’s best purchases as they strengthened their squad in a brilliant manner.

While everyone thought they would go for Sam Curran to get him back into their side, it came as a surprise when CSK went all in for Stokes. CSK entered the auction with a purse of INR 20.45 crore and seven slots to fill, including two overseas slots. At the IPL 2023 auction, CSK made some surprising purchases and went all in for Stokes.

Ben Stokes and MS Dhoni have previously played together for the Rising Pune Supergiant. With Dwayne Bravo announcing his retirement from IPL, Stokes’ inclusion will work wonders for CSK. They also roped in Ajinkya Rahane, who put up some competitive performances last year while representing KKR. With Robin Uthappa exiting the scenario, getting Rahane into the team was a very tactical move.

There have been instances when CSK purchased uncapped and unknown players during the auction, and they turned out to be the game-changers and match-winners for the side. This time, they got the services of Shaik Rasheed, Nishant Sindhu, Ajay Mandal and Bhagath Verma to complete their 25-member squad.

CSK go big at the auction, aim for fifth title

CSK have won four IPL titles and two Champions Trophy T20 (CLT20) titles under the leadership of the legendary MS Dhoni. The wicketkeeper-batter has been leading CSK since 2008, the first edition of the tournament. He stepped down from the role ahead of the IPL 2022 as Ravindra Jadeja was named his successor, but things did not go according to plans and Dhoni had to return to captaincy midway into the tournament.

CSK’s outing last season was exactly opposite to their 2021 campaign, when they lifted the trophy for the fourth time. Entering the tournament as the defending champions, CSK ended their 2022 campaign in the ninth position and failed to make a big impact. This time, the franchise will be looking to get back to winning ways, in an attempt to lift their fifth title.

Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad became the new opening pair for CSK last season. Interestingly, both players have been in good touch with the bat and will be the ones to look out for. Ravindra Jadeja, after a lot of speculations, is back with CSK and will be Dhoni’s right hand. England all-rounders Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes will add depth to CSK's middle order.

CSK's left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary has been ruled out of IPL 2023 and has been replaced by another Indian left-arm seamer in Akash Singh.
