Mumbai Indians got off to an excellent start against Delhi Capitals in the 16th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 as skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan stitched a 71-run partnership for the first wicket. While Kishan was unfortunate to run himself out in the eighth over, Rohit stood his ground as he completed his first half-century of the tournament to drive Mumbai's chase.
However, Rohit skipped his half-century celebration as he knew there was more for him to get in the match. He added 15 more runs to take his team closer to the target but couldn't finish off the proceedings by himself as he failed to middle a Mustafizur Rahman delivery to see it being grabbed by keeper Abishek Porel.
Tilak Varma once again played a promising innings as he smashed a quickfire 29-ball 41 to put up a crucial 68-run stand with Rohit for the second wicket. He became Mukesh Kumar's breakthrough scalp of the match after being caught by Manish Pandey. Mukesh struck again in the very next ball as Suryakumar Yadav continued his faint form after handing a catch to Kuldeep Yadav which saw him getting out on a golden duck.
Jason Behrendorff and Piyush Chawla rattle DC's batting lineup
Earlier, Delhi Capitals had managed to score 172 in the first innings, courtesy of excellent knocks from skipper David Warner and all-rounder Axar Patel. Other than the duo, no other batter managed to go long as MI's Australian import Jason Behrendorff and veteran Indian spinner Piyush Chawla wreaked havoc on the Delhi batting unit.
Spinner Hrithik Shokeen gave Mumbai their first breakthrough by dismissing the out-of-form Prithvi Shaw before Manish Pandey joined Warner in the middle to stabilise the innings for DC. However, Chawla soon stole the show as he dismissed Pandey on 26 before coming back to send Rovman Powell and Lalit Yadav off in quick succession.
Behrendorff, on the other hand, got rid of the two dangermen, Warner and Patel, as he dismissed them within a span of three deliveries to put closure to a 67-run partnership. He then took the wicket of Abishek Porel in the same over to finish his three-wicket haul.
