The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has announced that construction on the much-anticipated Dwarka Stadium is set to start by the end of 2024. This state-of-the-art facility, positioned to become a major sporting hub in the capital, is now on an accelerated timeline with a projected completion date of September 2027.

The Dwarka Stadium project, inaugurated by former Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena in September 2022, is a milestone in Delhi's urban development. Covering 50.4 acres in Dwarka Sector 19B, the stadium will be developed under a public-private partnership between the DDA and real estate firm Omaxe. This collaboration will be DDA's first sports infrastructure project under such a model.

At the heart of the complex will be an international cricket-cum-football stadium with a seating capacity of 30,000 spectators. However, the facilities don't limit themselves to only major sports.

"It will be an integrated multisports arena with an international cricket-cum-football stadium having a seating capacity of 30,000, indoor multisports facilities with a seating capacity of 2,000, a clubhouse facility with a minimum of 3,000 memberships, and other facilities for swimming, tennis, badminton, squash, table tennis, etc.,” said a DDA official as quoted by TOI.

We are expecting many international events to be organised here: Concessionaire

While the stadium will offer 3,000 club memberships, it will also cater to the general public. The official mentioned that the facility will be on a pay-and-play basis, and allowed for a minimum of 25% of the capacity of the facilities.

“All sports facilities developed on the site will be available for users without requiring membership. Non-members can use the facility on a pay-and-play basis, and they will be allowed for a minimum of 25% of the capacity of the facilities,” the official added.

Stadium to be built at a cost of INR 350 crore

The project, with an estimated cost of INR 350 crore, is designed to be more than just a sports venue. It will include approximately 3.5 lakh square feet of commercial facilities, encompassing retail spaces, a hotel, and office areas, all available on a 99-year lease.

"Delhi, the capital of India with a population of more than 3.3 crore, has long awaited a world-class cricket stadium. With the construction of an international cricket-cum-football stadium, we are expecting many international events to be organised here," said the concessionaire.
