Australia women’s skipper Meg Lanning could be making her much-anticipated return to cricket just in time for the upcoming WBBL season. Lanning was ruled out of the Women’s Ashes 2023 four weeks before the one-off Test of the marquee series after Cricket Australia's medical staff advised her to rest due to an illness that remains undisclosed.
Lanning recently returned from a mental health break after being away from the game for months. In her short appearance post the break, Lanning led the Aussies to a record-extending T20 World Cup title and even competed in the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, leading the Delhi Capitals.
Furthermore, with Lanning expected to make her return to cricket soon, star Aussie batter Ellyse Perry took centre stage to provide an update on her potential return. Perry opined that she does not have anything concrete around Lanning but opined that she has full support of the Australian team and her teammates at Cricket Victoria.
"I don’t have anything concrete around Meg, other than I see Meg around, she’s obviously got the full support of the playing squad and all her teammates at Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia. From Meg’s point of view, she’ll keep tracking hopefully really well and hopefully be available for cricket if and when she wants to be," Ellyse Perry was quoted as saying by news.com.au.
I didn’t discuss anything with any other clubs: Perry
Furthermore, Perry also discussed her commitments with her WBBL side Sydney Sixers, and addressed the rumours that she was looking for a change. The star batter clearly stated that there were no discussions with any other clubs and that she feels a strong connection with Sixers.
"I didn’t discuss anything with any other clubs, there’s just that really strong sense of connection to the Sixers, being involved in the club from the very start and having the opportunity to captain across those seasons as well has been wonderful. There’s a number of girls that have been there from the start, I think we really value that connection that we’ve got," Perry said.
