Jasprit Bumrah's availability was a major topic of discussion ahead of the five-match Test series against England, which concluded earlier this week. The Gujarat pacer had sustained a stress fracture on his back during the fifth Test match in the Border-Gavaskar series earlier this year after taking 32 wickets. This forced him to monitor his workload during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
India's head coach Gautam Gambhir said ahead of the England series that Bumrah will participate in just three out of the five Tests. The talismanic speedster featured in the first, third, and fourth Tests only. Bumrah did receive flak from a section of fans for skipping the fifth Test, which India had to win to square the series. However, many experts have voiced their support for the 31-year-old.
Discarded India batter Ajinkya Rahane heaped praise on Bumrah for giving captain Shubman Gill and the management clarity about his availability well beforehand. Rahane lauded Bumrah's courage, saying that many players would get dropped for conveying a similar message to the team.

“What I liked about Bumrah was that he was pretty clear; he knew what he wanted to do before the series. He said, 'I'll play the first one, I won't play the second one, and then I'll play the third'. Great clarity for a captain. It's always difficult to speak with such clarity to a captain. As a player when you are playing for India that's really difficult. Often it happens, some player tells you such things and he gets dropped. It shows that he has the courage to tell the captain and management to be really clear,” Rahane said on his YouTube channel.
“It also shows that he is keeping the team ahead of himself. Sometimes it is not easy to do so when you are playing for India. As a player, when you are representing India, it's not easy. Sometimes players convey the same message to the team, and then they get dropped,” he added.
