Five-time champion Mumbai Indians triumphed over the Lucknow Super Giants in the 2023 Indian Premier League Eliminator at the Chepauk on Wednesday, moving one step closer to the title. MI skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. After opting to bat first, they posted 182 runs on the board to defend. However, Lucknow were bundled out for 101 in 16.3 overs in the 183-run chase.
Akash Madhwal, who became the first bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul in IPL playoff history, curated the perfect victory for MI. Madhwal finished with incredible figures of 5 for 5 off 3.3 overs to completely destroy LSG and make up the opportunity for MI to move one step closer to another IPL final. Jofra Archar and Jasprit Bumrah's absence was compensated by yorker expert, who entered this match without much IPL experience. Apart from Madhwal's clinical display, poor running between the wickets also haunted Lucknow during the stiff run chase.
Engineers have a tendency to learn early: Madhwal
When questioned about whether he had replaced Jasprit Bumrah for the MI during the post-match presentation ceremony, he added, “I was just practicing, and waiting for this opportunity. I did my engineering and played tennis-ball cricket since it was my passion. Engineers have a tendency to learn early! I just practice, and that is what we execute. I'm proud of myself, but I'll try to be better. Bumrah bhai has his own place, and I'm just trying to play a role. Nicholas Pooran was the best wicket. Everyone at home believes I'm working hard."
Madhwal equaled legendary Anil Kumble's record for the most economical five-haul wicket in IPL history. Soon after the right-arm pacer’s match-winning feat, formers and current players showered praises on him.
