There have been a plethora of memorable wins in cricketing history for both the full members and the associate teams, respectively. Now, when it comes to associate sides, not often minnows have caused an upset against a full-member playing nation. Over the years, we have mostly witnessed teams like Netherlands and Ireland creating a stir with some unbelievable wins.
But Scotland raised eyebrows back in 2018 when they defeated the-then World No 1, England, in their own backyard named, Grange, to script a memorable win. But that one man which the world could not forget was the leader of the team, Kyle Coetzer, who finally decided to bid adieu to his international cricket career. Notably, the former Scotland skipper had stepped away from the captaincy role back in May 2022, post their USA tour in the ODI format.
Moreover, he also hung up his boots from the T20Is. Now, the Aberdeen-born, after leading Scotland on 110 occasions across all the formats, has decided to move ahead with another role. The 38-year-old has led Scotland on 110 occasions across all formats.
Talking of his legacy, Kyle Coetzer is the highest run-getter for Scotland in ODIs. Furthermore, Coetzer has been a stalwart in Scotland's success over the years. The Scottish batter is also the first centurion (156-run knock) in a world cup for his country which came against Zimbabwe in 2015. He also led Scotland to a memorable victory in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World cup against Hong Kong in 2016, which was their first-ever victory in any ICC mega event. Furthermore, Coetzer was also named the ICC Men's Associate Cricketer of the Decade in 2020 and conferred with an MBE for Services to Cricket in the same year.
Kyle Coetzer set to take a new role in The Hundred
The legendary Scottish, Kyle Coetzer, is now all geared up to take up the assistant coaching role with the Northern Diamonds (Women's team) in the coveted tournament, The Hundred. Reflecting on his cricket journey so far, Coetzer was mulling over his retirement decision for some time now and called his timing of the decision, perfect. Moreover, the Scottish deemed his newfound opportunity to be irresistible.
"I don't ever think there's a perfect time for a decision like this. But I've been considering my options for some time, and an opportunity came up which was too good to turn down," Coetzer stated.
"The balance that the Scotland team need at this time was outweighed by the opportunity for me to move into coaching, and I'm extremely excited about the chance to work with such a high-profile team," the 38-year-old continued.
"Creating memories, being around friends, and always finding a way to punch above our weight was just terrific. I've always loved the battle of trying to improve against all odds. With both the current squad and past players, it's all been so special. I must thank all the coaches and teammates and staff, and the support I've had from friends and family to help me in my career. There's been so many people all around the world who've helped me to shape me in my career, and will continue to do so," Coetzer concluded.
