Youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal marked his arrival in international cricket in style as he scored a phenomenal hundred on his debut in the first Test against West Indies in Dominica. The 21-year-old scored a sublime 171 (387) laced with 16 fours and a six and put on a mammoth 229-run stand for the first wicket with captain Rohit Sharma.

Indian head coach Rahul Dravid was delighted with Jaiswal’s debut knock and praised him for pacing his innings well. Notably, he became the 17th Indian player to score a hundred on Test debut and the fourth consecutive batter from Mumbai.

“I was very pleased to see that he was willing to play an attacking game when required, but also knuckle down and be defensive and work hard for his runs when required. As a coach, nothing pleases you more than that,” Dravid was quoted as saying by Cricket Addictor.

Further, speaking about young talents such as Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, Dravid said that the duo will face tougher challenges as they play more cricket as the teams get to know them better.

“I know that Jaiswal and Gill will face other tougher challenges as they play more and more cricket. Teams will start getting to know them better. The challenge for Jaiswal [and Gill] is to respond to the tactics and strategies that West Indies is going to come up with in this game,” he added.

Ashwin shone on his first appearance after WTC final snub

Apart from Jaiswal, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was making a comeback to the team after not getting picked in the XI in the World Test Championship also had a remarkable Test match. The 36-year-old picked up 12/131 (5/60 and 7/71) during the game. Notably, it was his eighth ten-wicket haul of his career and his sixth occasion when he picked a five-wicket haul in each inning of the game.

Meanwhile, after leading the series 1-0, India will be eager to seal it as the two teams lock horns in the second Test from Thursday, July 20 at Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad.
